Alternative construction and demolition (C&D) waste characterization method proposal

Abstract: Construction and demolition waste generally represents the majority of solid waste generated in Brazilian cities, and characterization of this waste stream is still incipient. Therefore, to support managers in the process in the diagnostic phase, this study consisted in a proposal qualitative characterization method in field, that use of construction and demolition (C&D) waste generation indicators. For this, a survey which have been divided in two stages: quantitative characterization based on a three-ind… Show more

“…RMSW is the residual garbage consisting of a mixed range of materials of high heterogeneity, remaining after the separate collection of recyclable components (like plastic and paper) and other materials such as bulky waste, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and household hazardous waste (HHW) [14]. RMSW production is rising faster than the global urbanization rate [8,15,16]. The collection and the disposal of RMSW are frequently unmanaged and unregulated in low-and middle-income nations [17,18].…”

“…Nevertheless, the effectiveness of implementing such practises in some developing countries is still very limited and will require in-depth assessment. It has been described by various researchers that the non-consistency of the C&DWM composition on different construction and demolition sites could yield different material characteristics (Cordoba et al, 2019;Bianchini et al, 2020). In addition, the heterogeneous composition of the CDW generates variable characteristics of the recycled aggregates, such as more sporadic shape, rougher surface, lower specific gravity, higher water absorption rate and lower mechanical behaviour (Malia et al, 2013;Cabral et al, 2010;Oliveira et al, 2011).…”
