Praziquantel (PZQ) is an anthelminthic drug that has been tested worldwide to treat parasitosis in farmed fish. Information regarding the applicability and sustainability of medications in tambaqui Colossoma macropomum farming is highly needed. This study investigated the effects of PZQ at different concentrations and exposure times on the hematological parameters of tambaqui and the efficacy against monogeneans. The toxicity test with PZQ was conducted at three exposure times (0.5 h, 1 h and 24 h). In each of them, five PZQ concentrations (3.12, 6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 mg L −1 ) were evaluated, with a control group, in triplicate, with six fish per unit. The same assays were conducted to evaluate the toxicity of ethanol, used as solvent. Based on the toxicity test and an in vitro test, the efficacy of PZQ against monogeneans in tambaqui was tested in four treatments (6.25, 12.5, 25 and 35 mg L −1 ), with long bath duration (24 h), with a control group, in triplicate, with six fish per unit. Fish were sampled and subjected to hematological and parasitological analyses. The use of ethanol as solvent did not interfere significantly with the physiology of tambaqui. In the toxicity test with PZQ, the main hematological alterations were those related to the time of exposure, with reduction in hematocrit, hemoglobin and MCHC, in addition to a significant dose and time-dependent alteration in blood glucose. No mortality was observed, except three fish exposed to 50 mg L −1 for 24 h. No treatment removed 100% of the parasites from the gills of tambaqui; however, the lowest concentrations of PZQ were more effective against Anacanthorus sp., removing 61.8% at 12.5 mg L −1 . With these results, it is possible to consider key moments during tambaqui farming to apply the medication to prevent disease outbreaks.

This study aimed to assess the toxicity of praziquantel (anthelmintic drug) in different developmental stages of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) based on mortality, early ontogeny, growth, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes, histology and behaviour. Praziquantel at all tested concentrations ranging from 1 to 4 mg/L showed no significant adverse effects on mortality, the early ontogeny and behaviour locomotory (activity, moved distance and velocity) of carp after 35-day exposure. Concentrations of 3 and 4 mg/L caused significantly (P < 0.01) lower growth, total superoxide dismutase and catalase activities compared with controls. Praziquantel is safe for the early life of carp in concentrations ≤ 2 mg/L.

Intensive sh farming with inadequate management can imbalance the sh-pathogen-environment relationship, culminating in diseases outbreaks. In the case of tambaqui Colossoma macropomum farming, it may be affected by acanthocephalosis, a parasitic infection without a speci c and safe treatment yet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the active ingredients in trichlorfon, albendazole, piperazine and ivermectin, as well as calcium hydroxide and diatomaceous earth incorporated to the feed, to control Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae (Acanthocephala) in tambaqui. A 63-day trial was conducted in a completely randomized experimental design, with 7 treatments, 3 replicates each and 54 sh per treatment. Fish were sampled for weight gain and parasite count on days 0, 15, 35, and 63. In general, the e cacy of anthelmintics was low in the treatment of N. buttnerae in tambaqui. Nevertheless, among the tested products, calcium hydroxide and diatomaceous earth showed promising results (48.17% and 36.44% e cacy, respectively), followed by ivermectin and piperazine (15.93% and 12.63%, respectively). Future studies are warranted to test longer drug administration periods, novel products, and diverse experimental conditions to treat N. buttnerae in tambaqui, to provide information to develop strategies for disease management.
