“…Much relied on subjective observer interpretation and the use of correct lighting of the section during photograph capture. Korstjens et al (1998) discussed similar difficulties with photographic images as compared to radiographic images. Digital image analysis of radiographic trabecular bone architecture was used in previous studies (Geraets et al, 1990;Grynpas et al, 1992Grynpas et al, , 1994, and the reliability of the technique is well-established (Korstjens et al, 1997).…”

Radiographic images also capture trabecular structure throughout the entire section, and it was demonstrated that radiographic properties of trabecular bone architecture significantly correlate to biomechanical characteristics (Korstjens et al, 1998). As such, radiographic images of archeological bone sections were used in this study to conduct image analysis.…”

“…The three ROIs were subjected to a sequence of automatic measurement procedures. The procedure of extracting the quantitative data from the radiographic trabecular texture has been described extensively before and is presented here briefly for completeness 17,18 . First, the mean (MEAN) and standard deviation (STDEV) of the gray values were determined in the raw, unfiltered image samples.…”

“…The 29 measured geometrical, topological, and directional parameters of the radiographic trabecular bone pattern and the manner of standardization are presented in Table 1. The employed method of measuring spatial orientation of trabecular bone, its validity, and clinical application have been described previously and in more detail 17–22 …”
