Radiographic Features of Mandibular Trabecular Bone Structure in Hypodontia

Abstract: A limited number of parameters of radiographic mandibular trabecular bone structure correlate with the number of missing teeth. However, a markable difference in radiographic parameters of mandibular trabecular bone structure between hypodontia and non-hypodontia subjects could not be demonstrated.

“…These findings could be used not only as criteria for ED diagnostics, but could be applied during treatment planning of ED patients in prosthetics design with respective support for dental implants. Nevertheless, in other study, no difference of trabecular mandibular structure was noted between healthy and ED subjects [23]. Use of CBCT helped to understand that maxillary sinus volume and its surface area among patients with ED were statistically smaller compared to control group of individuals without the above-mentioned pathology [24].…”

“…The jawbone density in ectodermal dysplasia patients, for example, is higher (32,33). The latter seems to apply to ectodermal dysplasia patients only, as Cr eton et al (34) could not demonstrate notable radiographic differences in the structure of mandibular trabecular bone between hypodontia patients without ectodermal dysplasia and healthy subjects. So, other factors are responsible for the higher loss of implants in patients with severe hypodontia such as location and amount of available bone (16, 17, 20-23, 26, 35).…”
