Advancements in Fabrication and Application of Chitosan Composites in Implants and Dentistry: A Review

Abstract: Chitosan is a biopolymer that is found in nature and is produced from chitin deacetylation. Chitosan has been studied thoroughly for multiple applications with an interdisciplinary approach. Antifungal antibacterial activities, mucoadhesion, non-toxicity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility are some of the unique characteristics of chitosan-based biomaterials. Moreover, chitosan is the only widely-used natural polysaccharide, and it is possible to chemically modify it for different applications and function… Show more

“…Several examples of chitosan-based matrices for bone applications have been reported. However, due to its mechanical weakness [ 94 ], there is a need to combine chitosan with other materials in applications for bone tissue engineering [ 95 ]. Nanoparticles formed using chitosan display interesting properties, such as low toxicity; good absorbability, permeability, and moisture retention; and is easily degradable.…”

“…Freeze-drying is an industrial procedure that is employed to assure the long-term durability and preservation of pharmaceutical and biomedical products [ 41 ]. Freeze-drying works by freezing the material, lowering the surrounding pressure, and applying sufficient heat to enable the substance’s frozen water to sublimate straight from the solid matrix to the gaseous state.…”

“…In addition, CS itself has the property of accelerating the rate of wound healing and promoting bone formation. CS has been used in wound dressings, implant scaffolds, and dental applications [ 128 ]. Cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber with CS and propolis promotes burned skin repair [ 129 ].…”
