Adaptive Detection Application of Covariance Matrix Estimator for Correlated Non-Gaussian Clutter

Abstract: In the clutter-dominated disturbance modeled as spherically invariant random vectors with the same covariance matrix and possibly correlated texture components, we propose an estimator of covariance matrix, which exploits all secondary data fully and introduces a constraint of matrix trace. Moreover, its adaptive target detection application is investigated. For match between the estimated clutter group size and the actual one, the adaptive normalized matched filter (ANMF) with the new estimator of any number … Show more

“…The IPIX database, a widely used database for sea surface small target detection, is collected by McMaster University in Canada. The test target in 1993 [18] is an anchored spherical block of Styrofoam, which is wrapped with wire mesh, and its diameter is about 1 m. Each dataset consists of complex echoes of 14 continuous range bins, and the length of the echoes in each bin is 2 17 . Meanwhile, in 1998 [24], the test targets are floating boats.…”

“…In order to make the detectors fully adaptive, a set of secondary data, free of signal components, but sharing same characteristics with the data under test (primary data), is often assumed to be available [7,8]. This has led to the development of some adaptive range-spread target detectors in homogeneous Gaussian disturbance with unknown CCM [9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…They share a lot in common that the targets' energy cannot be well accumulated both in time and Doppler domain. Therefore, the traditional statistics-based detection methods [5] and fractal techniques [6] are inappropriate dealing with maneuvering targets especially in the low signal-to-noise/clutter ratio (SNR/SCR) environment.…”
