Acute bilateral trigeminal neuropathy associated with nervous system lymphosarcoma in a dog

Abstract: A nine-year-old dog presented with clinical signs consistent with bilateral trigeminal neuropathy. Multicentric lymphoma was diagnosed, and neoplastic lymphocytes were identified in the cerebrospinal fluid. Electromyography revealed spontaneous activity in temporal and masseter muscles. Histopathological examination demonstrated neoplastic cell invasion of temporal and masseter myofibers and of multiple peripheral nerves, including the trigeminal nerve. Central nervous system pathology consisted primarily of s… Show more

“…Lymphocytic infiltrates in the (lepto-)meninges, cranial nerves, spinal nerves roots and the brachial plexus have been previously reported in dogs (Rosin 1982, Britt and others 1984, Christopher and others 1986, Hobbs and Cobb 1990, Pfaff and others 2000, Fernandez and others 2013, Ueno and others 2014). Only one case report describes infiltration of a peripheral nerve with malignant B-lymphocytes (Schaffer and others 2012).…”

“…Ultrasound investigations may reveal thickened hypoechoic nerve roots (Fernandez and others 2013). CSF investigations carried out both in human and canine NL patients often exhibit elevated numbers of lymphocytes or neoplastic lymphocytes (Rosin 1982, Britt and others 1984, Christopher and others 1986, Hobbs and Cobb 1990, Pfaff and others 2000, Grisariu and others 2010, Fernandez and others 2013). …”

“…The dog presented a good response until the fifth week of therapy when it started to show neurological signs. Lomustine was introduced because of its high lipid solubility and ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (Fulton and Steinberg, 1990;Pfaff et al, 2000;Fan and Kitchell, 2000;Fan et al, 2002). Despite of the change in protocol, the lymphoma was in advanced stage and the dog did not respond to the therapy.…”
