Vários fatores contribuem para o desenvolvimento da obesidade em cães, como genética, raça, idade ABSTRACT Obesity is the most common nutritional disease in dogs and may cause many changes in body systems and limit the longevity of the animals. Many factors contribute to the development of obesity in dogs, as genetics, breed, age, lack of physical activity, caloric food composition, type and form of nutrition, hormonal disorders, medicine, and factors related to the owners. Due to the lack of studies on the nutritional and environmental aspects involved in the development of canine obesity, the present study aimed to obtain information through owners surveys. Interviews with 254 owners of overweight or obese dogs were conducted atUniversity Veterinary Hospitals. Dogs were selected through body condition score (BCS) from 6 to 9, according to the scale described by LAFLAMME (1997) INTRODUÇÃOA obesidade é um distúrbio nutricional que muitas vezes não é diagnosticado como uma doença.
The aim of this study was to perform a morphometric analysis of the various parts of the intestine of the domestic quail. Twenty-four female quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) aged 37 weeks were used and accommodated in laying cages for 12 weeks. Each group was fed a standardized diet containing different quantities of calcium: 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% and 3.5%. The birds were weighed, killed, and samples of 1 cm were collected from the duodenum, jejunum and ileum and submitted to the histological routine. The sections obtained were stained in haematoxylin & cosin (H&E). For morphometric analysis, 30 villi and 30 crypts of each segment of the small intestine were measured in order to determine the height and area of the villi, as well as the depth of the crypts. The results showed that although the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract was maintained in all the birds treated with the different calcium levels, a calcium level of 3.0% showed the most promise. as the levels of 2.0% and 2.5% did not cause any alteration in the intestinal tract. Furthermore, a calcium level of 3.5% led to a significant reduction in the height of the villosities, and in consequence reduced the digestive and absorptive capabilities.
The objective of this study was to report owner experiences and satisfaction in treating a pet with diabetes mellitus using a descriptive report from an Internet-based survey. Descriptive analysis of results was performed, χ(2) tests were used to detect differences in responses between dog and cat owners, and correlations were assessed using the nonparametric Spearman rank correlation. A total of 834 owners participated in the survey. More diabetic dogs (97%) than cats (82%) were treated with insulin injections. Insulin was administered twice daily in 87% of dogs and 73% of cats. Porcine lente and neutral protamine Hagedorn were the most commonly administered insulins in dogs. In cats, glargine and protamine zinc insulin were the most commonly used insulins. Most pets were not fed a prescribed diabetes diet. More cat (66%) than dog (50%) owners were satisfied with the diabetic control achieved. Cat owners were more likely to use home blood glucose monitoring. Treatment was considered expensive by the majority of owners. Few published reports follow diabetic pets after diagnosis or report owner satisfaction. The results of this study provide useful information that may help veterinarians better educate owners and set expectations regarding diabetes treatment and quality of life for diabetic pets.
This study was performed to gather more information on immunization practices performed in dogs by surveying owners of the southern of Espírito Santo State, totalizing 344 interviews. Statistical analysis of frequency and correlation were performed. The survey consisted of questions regarding the implementation of vaccination in dogs and aware of vaccine protocols by the owners, and also collect data about the cost of performing vaccines, the coverage of public campaigns of rabies vaccination and socioeconomic status of respondents. It was concluded that public campaign of rabies vaccination is satisfactory, as the most respondents was aware and performed that vaccines annually, independent of schooling level. Nevertheless, polyvalent vaccination is performed by less than a half of studied population, and owners were more aware about vaccination protocol in puppies than in adult dogs. Vaccination is still performed, in part, by non-specialist. The awareness of owners regarding correct protocols and application of vaccines by veterinarians should be performed to guarant...
Silva, et al.; Metastatic submandibular acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma in a dog. Braz J Vet Pathol, 2018, 11(1), 19 -23 DOI: 10.24070/bjvp.1983 Abstract A seven-year-old female mixed-breed dog was diagnosed with an uncommon histological variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with lymph node metastases. Therefore, the objective of this report was to describe the gross and microscopic findings of this uncommon SCC histological variant. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mass revealed a squamous cell carcinoma. On necropsy, the submandibular region revealed nodular, multifocal to coalescing, ulcerated masses with firm and fluctuant areas. Furthermore, enlarged submandibular and cervical lymph nodes with loss of normal architecture suggestive of metastasis were present. A definitive diagnosis of submandibular acantholytic squamous cell carcinoma was made upon histopathological evaluation. This variant is rare in humans and animals.
