Sciatic T‐cell neurolymphomatosis in a dog

Abstract: Infiltration of peripheral nerves distal to the plexus by neoplastic lymphocytes has been rarely reported in dogs; only one previous case report describes B-cell infiltration of the femoral nerve. A 4.5-year-old female cross-breed dog presented with a three-week history of tail flaccidity, tenesmus, anorexia and progressive monoparesis of the right pelvic limb. Ultrasound imaging revealed a thickened gastric wall and a large mass at the root of the mesentery. MRI demonstrated enlargement of the right L6 and L7… Show more

“…Lymphoma is the main secondary tumor in the feline CNS and neurolymphomatosis is a rare condition in cats, other animals, and humans (Allen & Amis 1975, Hankenson et al 1998, Kuntzer et al 2000, Mellanby et al 2003, Higgins et al 2008, Choi et al 2013, Shree et al 2016. The neoplastic infiltration in leptomeninges (leptomeningeal lymphomatosis) and perivascular space from medullar parenchyma, as observed in the present study, is a common consequence relative to spinal nerve neurolymphomatosis (Lane et al 1994, Schaffer et al 2012, Mandrioli et al 2012, Rupp et al 2014, Sakurai et al 2016. The unusual feature of this condition can lead to confusion with other neurological conditions, such as vasculitis and mononeuritis (Mandrioli et al 2012).…”

“…This is particularly important in human medicine because paraneoplastic syndromes and chemotherapy toxicity are other causes of neuropathy (Antoine & Camdessanché, 2007). Cranial or spinal nerve involvement in lymphoma has been described in dogs, cats and horses, and the term neurolymphomatosis has been increasingly used (Hsueh et al, 2019; Lehmbecker et al, 2014; Mandrioli et al, 2012; Rupp et al, 2014; Sakurai et al, 2016; Schaffer et al, 2012).…”

“…Although lymphoma is one of the more common types of cardiac tumors, 19 nervous system involvement is rarely reported in canine lymphoma cases. 14,16,17,20 Neurolymphomatosis refers to a rare manifestation of lymphoma or leukemia involving neoplastic infiltration of peripheral nerves. 8 The clear involvement of the peripheral nervous system, but not the central nervous system, in our case is compatible with a diagnosis of neurolymphomatosis.…”
