Abnormalities of Vascular Structure and Function in Children With Perthes Disease

Abstract: Children with Perthes disease exhibit small artery caliber and reduced function, which is independent of body composition. These data imply that that Perthes disease may reflect a wider vascular phenomenon that could have long-term implications for the vascular health of affected individuals.

“…16 This finding is consistent with evidence that children with LCPD are of relatively small stature, 26,27 have disproportionately reduced arterial caliber, 28 and may exhibit delayed skeletal maturation. 29 However, there were no differences between the birth weights of affected and unaffected twins in our study.…”

“…Disproportionate arterial size has also been demonstrated, which may have a role in the disease aetiology. 28 Congenital disease associations have also been observed in Perthes disease, which suggest that a prenatal event/factor may be important in the disease aetiology. The lack of control populations and 'specialist centre' case ascertainment has complicated the validity of such studies, and has introduced the potential for bias.…”
