Background We analyzed the efficacy of the interface design of speech generating devices on three non-verbal adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in hopes of improving their on-campus communication and cognitive disability. The intervention program was created based on their social and communication needs in school. Two operating interfaces were designed and compared: the Hierarchical Relating Menu and the Pie Abbreviation-Expansion Menu.Methods The experiment used the ABCACB multiple-treatment reversal design. The test items included: (1) accuracy of operating identification; (2) interface operation in response to questions; (3) degree of independent completion. Each of these three items improved with both intervention interfaces.ResultsThe children were able to operate the interfaces skillfully and respond to questions accurately, which evidenced the effectiveness of the interfaces.ConclusionsWe conclude that both interfaces are efficacious enough to help nonverbal children with ASD at different levels.

Typing every character in a text message may require more time or effort than strictly necessary. Skipping spaces or other characters may be able to speed input and reduce a user's physical input effort. This can be particularly important for people with motor impairments. In a large crowdsourced study, we found workers frequently abbreviated text by omitting midword vowels. We designed a recognizer optimized for expanding noisy abbreviated input where users often omit spaces and mid-word vowels. We show using neural language models for selecting conversational-style training text and for rescoring the recognizer's n-best sentences improved accuracy. On noisy touchscreen data collected from hundreds of users, we found accurate abbreviated input was possible even if a third of characters was omitted. Finally, in a study where users had to dwell for a second on each key, sentence abbreviated input was competitive with a conventional keyboard with word predictions.

RESUMOObjetivo: escutar a percepção materna sobre a introdução e uso da prancha de comunicação ampliada e alternativa na clínica de linguagem da paralisia cerebral. Métodos: foram realizadas entrevistas com um roteiro semi-dirigido e através da coletânea de narrativas foram criadas categorias de análise a partir de três pontos norteadores: a) a constituição da função materna e seu exercício junto ao sujeito com paralisia cerebral; b) a interação dialogal sob a ótica bakhtiniana; e c) os efeitos da clínica de linguagem na função materna e no diálogo das mães com seus lhos. Resultados: os resultados indicam diferentes tipos de uso do recurso na díade mãe-lho, tendo relação com a qualidade do exercício da função materna e a forma de apresentação do recurso ao usuário e a sua família. Quando a concepção de linguagem com a qual é implementado o recurso não inclui a família, nem considera o exercício da função materna, os resultados na sua generalização e manutenção são precários. Nos casos em que houve o debate sobre o uso familiar da prancha, o processo de intersubjetividade do sujeito sem oralidade foi favorecido o uso e a generalização foram ampliados. Conclusão: conclui-se que a concepção de linguagem dialógica de Bakhtin, atravessada pela psicanálise, permite uma abordagem mais e caz do recurso comunicativo investigado. Con ito de interesses: inexistente é vista por alguns fonoaudiólogos como um critério eletivo para que tais sujeitos não recebam intervenção no âmbito da linguagem, restringindo o atendimento a aspectos da motricidade orofacial, como a alimentação. Já nos casos em que o terapeuta não domina os recursos de comunicação ampliada e alternativa (CAA), a prancha de comunicação pode ser pensada como uma forma de trabalhar a linguagem. Entretanto, a simples tomada de decisão para implantar um sistema complementar e alternativo de comunicação por si só não garante ao fonoaudiólogo o sucesso estimado. Há necessidade de re exão acerca da concepção teórica com a qual o pro ssional introduz e trabalha o recurso, pois esta pode gerar impactos distintos em sua implementação junto a usuários e familiares. Nas publicações cientí cas da área, observa-se que a inserção do recurso ocorre a partir de visões comportamentalistas e cognitivistas, o que pode explicar as limitações na generalização e manutenção do uso da CAA 1 .
