A Tool For Measurement of Innovation Newness and Adoption in Tourism Firms

Abstract: The paper focuses on the newness characteristic of realized innovations and their adoption in tourism firms. For that purpose it investigates three research problems: (i) measurement of newness level and adoption of tourism innovations; (ii) definition of tourism innovations taxonomy (needed for the measurement); and (iii) statistical analysis of innovations’ adoption in tourism destinations (result of the measurement). The main aim of the research was to develop and validate the tool used for such measurement… Show more

“…However, despite the growing interest in empirical research on innovation, no model has been developed for the innovative behavior of firms in tourism. Given the noteworthy differences in innovations in services (Drejer, 2004;Martínez-Ros & Orfila-Sintes, 2012) and specifically in tourism (Hjalager, 2010;Križaj, Brodnik, & Bukovec, 2014;Volo, 2006), the literature pinpoints the need for a specific study on innovative behavior (Camisón & Montfort-Mir, 2012) and its economic outcomes in tourism firms (Lin, 2013). Understanding of innovation patterns in these firms is fundamental to developing an innovation policy that contributes in greater measure to increasing productivity (Blake, Sinclair, & Campos-Soria, 2006), profitability (Martínez-Ros & Orfila-Sintes, 2012) and competitiveness in firms and tourist destinations (Camisón & Montfort-Mir, 2012).…”

“…Yet, estimating the scale of innovation in tourism is problematic (cf. Hertog et al, 2011;Camison, 2011;Krizaj, 2012; Orfila-Sintes, Crespi-Cladera and Martinez-Ros, 2005). This reflects significant unresolved differences of opinion on how it should be measured and on the factors that influence its form in various sectors, locations and over time (e.g.…”

“…Mesmo dentro do sector de turismo existe uma variedade de empresas e ramos (hospedagem, restauração, transportes, entretenimento e lazer, agenciamento/organização de viagens, etc.) que se diferenciam entre si, em termos de processos, dinâmicas de funcionamento e por conseguinte na maneira como se comportam perante a inovação (Camisón & Monfort-Mir, 2012;Krizaj, Brodnik & Bukovec, 2014).…”
