A Review on Designing the Waterproof Breathable Fabrics Part II: Construction and Suitability of Breathable Fabrics for Different Uses

Abstract: This article describes engineering design of waterproof breathability fabrics specifically designed for leisure, medial uses and survival clothing. In many applications, breathable fabrics not only satisfy water-vapor permeability but also a number of other functional characteristics. Garment design, cut and fit, design of seam, constituent of multilayer structure and various forms of ventilation system are often modified depending on the functional requirement. In the comparative evaluation of several breatha… Show more

“…[28][29][30][31][32] It is noted that these temperatures were selected based on the heat resistance of polyester, cotton, and heat fusion point of the TPU film. The heatpressing time was set to 30 s. [31][32][33][34][35] Each selected fabric sample was horizontally placed on the top of the TPU film ( Figure 4). During each thermal bonding process, a Teflon sheet (0.13 mm thick) was applied to cover the fabric and the TPU film.…”

“…To the wearer, comfort can be qualified as one approach to evaluate performance of clothing. In this sense, fabric engineers and clothing designers ought to consider clothing comfort as a quality aspect contributing to total clothing performance and the user's satisfaction (Hatch ; Mukhopadhyay and Midha ).…”

“…(2) This type of apparel is used by a variety of professions, such as gowns for surgeons and nurses, foul weather survival clothing for military personnel, or protective gear for firefighters. (2) Depending on the fabric used to make apparel, workers may have a wide variety of exposures (e.g., cotton dust, (3) latex, (4) formaldehyde (5) ). The PTFE fabric and processes used to produce waterproof, breathable apparel may cause specific and unique particulate hazards.…”
