A redescription of Leptodactylus jolyi Sazima and Bokermann (Anura, Leptodactylidae) and the recognition of a new closely related species

Abstract: Based on freshly collected and recorded topotypes, we re-describe Leptodactylus jolyi and describe a closely related new species from the municipality of Uberlândia (MG, Brazil). As some other species of the L. fuscus group, the new species present longitudinal skin folds on dorsal surface of shank. Leptodactylus marambaiae is a shorte-legged species, in L. jolyi the shank reaches 61–65% of the SVL, and 62–68 % in the new species. Males L. jolyi are larger (45 mm SVL) than those of L. gracilis (38.5 mm), than … Show more

“…A recent molecular phylogeny of amphibians (Frost et al 2006) suggested that the genus Leptodactylus Fitzinger includes the former genera Adenomera Steindachner, Lithodytes Fitzinger, and Vanzolinius Heyer (previously synonymized with Leptodactylus by De Sá et al, 2005), consisting of a total of 83 species (81 species referred in Frost 2007 plus two new species recently described by Giaretta &Costa 2007 andBerneck et al 2008). These species have been traditionally clustered in morphological groups (e.g., Heyer 1970, L. melanonotus group;Heyer 1973, L. marmoratus group;Heyer 1978, L. fuscus group;Heyer 1979Heyer , 2005Heyer 1994, L. podicipinus-L. wagneri group), without a phylogenetic framework.…”

“…Our study is the first to consider all reptiles (lizards, snakes, caimans, and freshwater turtles) in the TM region (Costa et al 2014 only covered the snakes). Other species, besides those recorded in faunistic surveys, have been described in the TM region: Uberlândia municipal-ity is the type locality of the Ischnocnema penaxavantinho, Leptodactylus sertanejo, Pseudopaludicola facureae and Apostolepis tertulianobeui (Lema 2004;Giaretta and Costa 2007;Andrade and Carvalho 2013); Boana paranaiba is described in the Araguari municipality ; Drymoluber brazili described in Uberaba (Gomes 1918); and Bokermannohyla napolii in Perdizes, at the border with Serra da Canastra (Carvalho et al 2012).…”
