A radiation-hardened-by-design phase-locked loop using feedback voltage controlled oscillator

Abstract: This paper presents a radiation-hardened-by-design (RHBD) phase-locked loop (PLL) which utilizes a feedback voltage controlled oscillator (FBVCO) to mitigate a single event transient (SET) strike. Whenever the SET pulse attacks the input control voltage of VCO, VCO gives rise to a frequency disturbance and PLL produces a huge jitter at the output clock. The proposed FBVCO consists of an open loop VCO, an integrator and a switched-capacitor resistor. The input transfer function of the FBVCO has a low-pass chara… Show more

“…The impact of these radiation responses on closed loop PLL circuits have also been studied [7] and other components of conventional phase locked loops optimized to a point where the oscillator remains as the largest SEE sensitivity [8]. Hardening against these effects has been achieved by measures such as the replication of bias stages [4], duplicating or triplicating larger parts of the oscillator [9], [10] and oscillator stage design methodologies aimed at suppressing the propagation of harmonic modes [6].…”

“…This phase error subsequently needs to be corrected by the feedback loop. Again, a mitigation can be found in TMR implementations of the divider [7,9] or by applying Radiation-Hardened-by-Design (RHBD) techniques, such as Double Interlocked Cell (DICE) implementations for memory elements [10].…”
