A novel type of antioxidant isolated from leaf wax of Eucalyptus leaves.

Abstract: As a search for natural antioxidants from plant materials, strong antioxidative activity was observed in leaf waxes extracted from Eucalyptus species. A novel type of antioxidant was isolated from the leaf wax of Eucalyptus globulus and identified as «-tritriacontan-16,18-dione. Antioxidative activities were determined by different methods ; a thiocyanate method, a thiobarbituric acid method, a total carbonyl value method and a weighing test. The antioxidant showedremarkable antioxidative activity in a water/a… Show more

“…The antioxidant activity of the water chestnut extract was determined spectrophotometrically according to the thiocyanate method of Osawa and Namiki (1981) with minor modifications. Different concentrations of the extract of water chestnut (Nelumbo nucifera) were mixed with 1 ml of linoleic acid (0.1 g in 100 ml of pure ethanol), 0.2 ml of H 2 O 2 (30 mM), 0.2 ml of ascorbic acid (100 mM), and 0.2 ml of ferric nitrate (20 mM).…”
