A Multiport Power Conversion System for the More Electric Aircraft

Abstract: In more electric aircraft (MEA) weight reduction and energy efficiency constitute the key figures. Additionally, the safety and continuity of operation of its electrical power distribution system (EPDS) is of critical importance. These sets of desired features are in disagreement with each other, because higher redundancy, needed to guarantee the safety of operation, implies additional weight. In fact, EPDS is usually divided into isolated sections, which need to be sized for the worst-case scenario. Several c… Show more

“…Although multi-port systems are generally preferred in applications where power converters and transformers are used together, it can also be applied to electrical machines. For example, in distribution systems, multi-port machine configurations provide isolation between winding sets, as well as additional redundancy [5]. Fault tolerance is also the driving motivation behind multi-port electric machines [6], [7].…”

“…Consequently, it is unrealistic to directly construct an ac bus due to the frequency conflict. Alternatively, one can independently control the LPG and HPG via two rectifiers and then connecting their dc terminals to a common dc bus [6].…”

“…The power electronics market is driving an exploding increase in demand for highperformance power circuits pervading fields like automotive [1], avionics [2], and renewable energies [3]. An increasing attention is attracted by wide-band-gap power devices, e.g., silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, by virtue of their enhanced ratings in terms of switching speeds and frequencies, as well as higher operational temperature capability, as compared with e.g., silicon (Si) IGBTs [4,5].…”
