A Field Experiment on Reducing Drinking Straw Consumption by Default

Abstract: Against the background of the pollution of the environment through plastic waste, we conducted a field experiment (N = 195) to test the effectiveness of a default nudge intervention that aimed at reducing the consumption of plastic drinking straws. We assumed that separating straws from cups by default leads to an overall decrease in straw consumption. We hypothesized that individuals would consume straws less frequently when they had to pick straws actively out of a separate straw box for their drink compared… Show more

“…Voluntary behaviour change programmes are those which preserve the free will of participants. Examples include communication and informational campaigns, voice prompt messages, informational exhibits and serious games (Adestika, 2021; Baechler et al , 2020; Barkela et al , 2021; Lange et al , 2021; Mundt et al , 2020; Ohtomo and Ohnuma, 2014; Panagiotopoulou et al , 2021). Voluntary behaviour change, that is, motivated by intrinsic factors, can result in positive spillover effects and lower community resistance (Geiger et al , 2021).…”

“…The major drawbacks of PLA straws are their high cost arising from exorbitant raw materials, stringent degradation conditions unlike plant-based materials, and poor thermal resistance, , making them unsuitable for beverages served at elevated temperatures. With the growth of plastic straw production and consumption surpassing any other engineering material, alternative bioderived, biodegradable, and microplastic-free replacements are urgently needed for sustainable development. Unlike nonbiodegradable synthetic plastics, these alternative resources must be versatile in innumerable applications and readily assimilated in nature.…”

“…On the other hand, dishes that feature variable components (e.g., a burger with a beef or vegetable patty) usually have one of these components set as the default option. Evidence from several investigations on environmentally friendly behavior suggests that defaults are more likely to be chosen than the other options [12,19,20]. Therefore, the climate impact of chosen dishes with variable components may be significantly reduced by using components with the lowest GHG emissions as the default option.…”
