A fauna de peixes na bacia do Rio Peruípe, extremo Sul da Bahia

Abstract: Hydrological richness on extreme southern Bahia contrasts with the poorly known freshwater fish fauna. It is surprising the presence of several species still undescribed. The present study is the first contribution dealing with the fish fauna of the local river basins. We herein investigate fish fauna of Rio Peruípe basin, a remarkably freshwater drainage, with a wide estuary. Eleven localities, geo-referred, were evaluated in streams and rivulets along that freshwater drainage. The employment of methodology f… Show more

“…An opposite trend was observed for members of the order Characiformes, which is more representative in Central Group and North Group (with 80% and 30%, respectively) than South Group (25%). These results are in agreement with published information about various rivers included in South Group, where a higher proportion of Siluriformes was observed (e.g., Sarmento-Soares & Martins-Pinheiro, 2009, 2012Sarmento-Soares et al 2007, 2009b.…”

“…The predominance of Siluriformes and Characiformes as main components of the ichthyofauna of the Atlantic Rain Forest streams was expected because they are the dominant orders in Neotropical freshwater systems (Lowe-McConnell 1999;Abilhoa et al 2011) and were also observed in Atlantic Rain Forest streams (Casatti et al 2001;Sarmento-Soares et al 2007;Ferreira and Petrere 2009). “…Awaous tajasica and Eleotris pisonis were among the less common species and were collected only in the Lower Reaches of the main river. These two species are widely distributed in the coastal region of South America and are of marine-estuarine origin (Pezold & Cage 2002, Sarmento-Soares 2007. Poecilia reticulata and P. vivipara are widely distributed, the first was introduced into neotropical freshwater environments by release from aquariums or from use as controller of biological vectors (Ramos 2012).…”
