A Comparison of Impact of Chronic Periodontal Diseases and Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life

Abstract: Objectives To evaluate the impact of chronic periodontal diseases (PDs) and compare phases of nonsurgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients attending a tertiary care center of eastern Nepal. Materials and Methods Matched for socioeconomic status, participants were recruited in two groups: moderate-to-severe chronic periodontitis (n = 24, 43 ± 46 years) and chronic gingivitis (n = 25, 30 ± 96 years). “…The most authors noted that OHRQoL correlated with patient well‐being and general QoL and recommended to clinicians and healthcare providers to assess oral health and QoL tools to determine individual's treatment plans and new approaches to improve oral health of patients . In fact, the results of periodontal disease such as redness, bleeding while brushing, gum extraction, mobility of teeth and loss of teeth affect the chewing, swallowing and smile aesthetics, and as a result self‐esteem and QoL were affected by negative .…”

“…Periodontitis is known to affect OHRQoL by increasing the severity and extent of periodontal disease (Buset et al., ). Conversely, non‐surgical periodontal treatment can improve immediate and long‐term OHRQoL (Goel & Baral, ), particularly in terms of function, psychology and pain (Shanbhag, Dahiya, & Croucher, ). We noted significant improvement in the GOHAI score after periodontal treatment, especially for the pain perception and psychological domains, and there was also a tendency towards improvement for the physical functioning domain.…”

“…17 Periodontal inflammation, bone loss, increased mobility, and other symptoms of periodontal disease may have a significant impact on an individual's OHRQoL. 18 In a systematic review, Buset et al (2016) concluded that a correlation existed between severity of periodontal diseases and negative impact on quality of life. 10 In a recent study, Levin et al (2018) detected a significantly poor OHRQoL in patients with chronic periodontitis (ChP) before treatment specifically related to the following subscales: functional limitation, physical disability, psychological disability, and handicap.…”
