The objective of this study was to determine the effects of some antioxidant vitamins and trace elements on some metabolic and postpartum reproductive profiles in dairy cows during transition period. In the study, altogether 20 clinically healthy Brown Swiss dairy cows (aged 4-5 years-old) under the same management and feeding conditions in periparturient period were used. The animals were divided into two equal groups: control (C) and treatment (T) group (n=10 for each group). Vitamins (A, D, E) and trace elements (Cu, Mn, Se, Zn) were administered intramuscularly into the cows of the T group, while isotonic saline, as placebo, was injected subcutaneously into those in the C group. Blood samples were collected by venipuncture of the jugular vein at the beginning of transition period, parturition and 3-weeks after the parturition. The metabolic and reproductive parameters were determined. In the C group, statistically significant changes were observed in the levels of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), total protein (TP) (p<0.05), glucose (GLU), progesterone (P 4 ) (p<0.01), total cholesterol (T.CHOL), triglycerides (TG), UREA, creatinine (CRSC) and total bilirubin (TBIL) (p<0.001). In the T group, significant changes in the levels of NEFA, TBIL (p<0.05), T.CHOL, HDL, LDL (p<0.01), TG, GLU, P 4 , TAC and TOC (p<0.001) were observed. It was concluded that the administration of various vitamins and trace elements could be effective to improve some metabolic and reproductive profiles in dairy cows during the transition period.

The aim of this study was to determine the changes in serum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), serum β-hydroxybutyric acid (β-HBA), triglycerides, Ca, Na, and other metabolites (bilirubin, glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH)) in the blood of grazing, healthy goats at the time of parturition. Blood samples were taken weekly from the jugular vein of 11 goats, starting at week 2 antepartum (ap) until week 9 postpartum (pp). NEFA and β-HBA concentrations increased from week 2 ap to 2 weeks pp. The increase in NEFA level was not significant; however, the β-HBA levels were higher (P < 0.05) 2 weeks pp compared to the levels at 2 weeks ap. Triglycerides were recorded at maximum levels (P < 0.05) 2 weeks ap, with the lowest concentrations at 3 weeks pp. Bilirubin levels consistently increased up to 7 weeks pp, followed by a decrease. However, these changes were not significant. Similarly, GLDH activities increased until week 8 pp. A significant difference (P < 0.05) was recorded between the 1st week and 8th week pp. Ca and Na levels were lower during the 1st week pp and increased at 3 weeks pp. The results show that there are characteristic alterations of some metabolic blood parameters in goats around the time of parturition, which may be related to physiological changes.

ÖzetBu çalışmada geçiş dönemindeki ineklerde mineral uygulamalarının metabolik profil üzerine olan etkileri araştırılmıştır. Araştırmada aynı bakım ve beslenme şartlarında tutulan 20 adet montofon ırkı inek kullanıldı. Çalışmadaki inekler her grupta 10 hayvan olacak şekilde 2 eşit gruba ayrıldı. Deney grubundaki ineklere geçiş döneminin başlangıcında, kas içi yolla (20 ml/inek) bir mineral solüsyonu uygulandı. Kontrol grubundaki ineklere geçiş döneminin başlangıcında 20 ml serum fizyolojik placebo olarak derialtı yolla uygulandı. Her iki gruptaki ineklerin v. jugularislerinden geçiş döneminin başlangıcında, doğum anı ve doğumdan 3 hafta sonra olacak şekilde kan örnekleri alınmıştır. Metabolik parametreler olarak her iki grupta da NEFA, BHBA, albumin, glukoz, T. kolesterol, VLDL-kolesterol, LDLkolesterol, HDL-kolesterol, trigliserid, AST, ALT, GGT, T. bilirubin, kreatinin, BUN ve T. protein düzeyleri belirlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, geçiş döneminin başlangıcında özellikle selenyum, bakır, çinko ve mangan içeren bir mineral solüsyon uygulanmasının metabolik profil üzerine olumlu etkilerinin olabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır. Twenty healthy pregnant cows under the same care and feeding conditions were used in the study. The animals were divided into two equal groups including 10 animals in each. The trace mineral injection was administered to the experimental group intramuscularly (20 ml/cow) on the beginning of the transition period. 20 ml isotonic sodium chloride was injected subcutaneously on beginning of the transition period in the control group as placebo. Blood samples were taken by venipuncture of the jugular vein on beginning of the transition period, parturition time and three after parturition, respectively. The NEFA, BHBA, albumin, glucose, T. cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, AST, ALT, GGT, T. bilirubin, creatinine, BUN and T. protein levels were determined in the both groups as metabolic parameters. In conclusion, the mineral solution particularly contains selenium, copper, zinc and manganese that administrated on beginning of the transition period could be effective on metabolic parameters.
