“…This candidate gene was named NOT LIKE DAD ( NLD ) because the PK6 allele induces maternal embryos without paternal contribution. Parallel independent studies named the same gene MATRILINEAL ( MTL ) and Phospholipase A1 ( ZmPLA1 ) (Kelliher et al , ; Liu et al , ).…”

“…When this publication was in production, three articles (Kelliher et al 2017; Gilles et al 2017; Liu et al 2017) were published about cloning the gene underlying qhir1 QTL that codes for a sperm specific phospholipase and triggers haploid induction.…”

“…Novel edits in MTL result in 6.7% haploid offspring. A 4‐bp (CGAG) insertion in the fourth exon of ZmPLA1 in CAU5 (a haploid inducer derived from Stock 6) compared to the B73 reference genome was shown to be the cause of the haploid induction phenotype using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing (Liu et al ., ). In the ZmPLA1 knockout lines, the average HIR is approximately 2%, which is close to the HIR of stock 6, indicating that the ZmPLA1 knockout method can be used to create haploid inducers.…”
