5G MmWave Module for the ns-3 Network Simulator

Abstract: The increasing demand of data, along with the spectrum scarcity, are motivating a urgent shift towards exploiting new bands. This is the main reason behind identifying mmWaves as the key disruptive enabling technology for 5G cellular networks. Indeed, utilizing new bands means facing new challenges; in this context, they are mainly related to the radio propagation, which is shorter in range and more sensitive to obstacles. The resulting key aspects that need to be taken into account when designing mmWave cellu… Show more

“…For this reason, each interfering BS's beamforming has a circularly uniform orientation. Consequently, in (14), the angles of the beamforming vectors w TXx and w RXx as well as the angles of the spatial signatures u TX and u RX are not aligned with the angles of G is obtained by the NYU mmWave network simulator [21], and is fit with the exponential distribution in Remark 1 (n RX = 64, n TX = 256).…”

“…Although this tool has to be understood as a set of open source modules forming a generic network simulator, there exists an LTE module [24] that allows to simulate 4G networks. Further, there exists a module [25,26] that covers mmWave propagation aspects of 5G. Still, the main focus of the ns-3 simulator lies on network simulations.…”

“…A different ns-3 simulator module [65] for millimeter wave access has been developed at the same time as the work presented in this paper. However, Mezzavilla et al [65] state that relay devices and TCP performance is a topic for their future work, and therefore the module was not applicable for this study.…”
