Evaluation of intravenous regional perfusion with amphotericin B and dimethylsulfoxide to treat horses for pythiosis of a limb

Abstract: BackgroundTreatment for horses with pythiosis of a limb is challenging. This study aims to evaluate the effects of administering amphotericin B in a 10 % solution of dimethylsulfoxide by intravenous regional limb perfusion (IRLP) to treat horses for cutaneous pythiosis of a limb.ResultsAll 15 of the horses treated had complete resolutions of their lesion between 6 to 9 weeks after a single IRLP treatment. No complications were observed at the site of venipuncture for IRLP. Before initiation of treatment, there… Show more

“…Equine cutaneous pythiosis rapidly progresses, and treatment efficacy is influenced by the size and site of lesions, disease duration, and possibly the animal's age and physiological state (GROOTERS, 2014). Surgical excision is the most commonly applied therapy and is preferably combined with drugs such as potassium iodide or antifungal agents such as amphotericin B (DÓRIA et al, 2012(DÓRIA et al, , 2015CARVALHO et al, 2016). We also found reports of therapeutic success with 'Pitium-Vac' immunotherapy (SAMPAIO et al, 2016) and application of corticosteroid triamcinolone acetonide (CARDONA-ÁLVAREZ et al, 2016).…”

“…Lower seroprevalence (0.7 vs. 11.1%) and fewer horses than in the Rio Grande do Sul State of Brazil (6,353 vs. 550,000) [25,27] explain why the number of horses with pythiosis in Thailand is minimal with just one case reported to date [28] vs. hundreds of Brazilian horses reported with the disease [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36]. The striking difference in seroprevalences of the Thai (0.7%) and Brazilian (11.1%) horses could imply that Thai people, by comparison, might have a lower chance of having environmental exposure to P. insidiosum.…”
