Objective: To analyze the institutionalization of the higher education in Nursing in Rio Grande do Norte in the 1970s. Method: This is a qualitative research, with a historical-social approach, arising from consultations with documentary sources and interviews with characters that experienced this history. Data were analyzed in the light of Thematic Analysis. Results: The following categories appeared: The higher education in Nursing in Rio Grande do Norte; and The Nursing Department of Natal, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Conclusion: The operation of the higher education in Nursing in the state - in Mossoró (1971) and in Natal (1974) - stems from the effects of the University Reform, which is responsible for increasing the number of vacancies in higher education, opening new Nursing Schools in the country, as well as for raising the need for professional qualification related to the national developmental policy entailed by the Economic Miracle and to the implementation of the development plan of the Northeast Region.

Objective: to analyze the contribution of nurses to the construction of health policy in the state of Bahia, from 1925 to 1930. Methods: qualitative research, from a historical nature. Data were retrieved from five public archives, organized in a documentary corpus, and analyzed based on the health political analysis and the social control concepts, health policy and public health. Results: from 1925 to 1930, the State seized the work of the woman/nurse and established it in public health. This fact enabled the nurse’s contribution to the construction of the health policy of the state of Bahia, which took place by the implementation of sanitary education actions, home visits and hygienic surveillance. Final considerations: the female nurse’s work made the health policy of the state of Bahia viable and was an ideal instrument to access homes and instruct/advise people in their daily lives to adopt behaviors that prevent the occurrence and, above all, the spread of diseases.

Evidence of nursing patterns of knowing communicated by the brazilian press before Florence Nightingale’s model

Objective: to identify evidence of nursing patterns of knowing disseminated by the Brazilian press before the implementation of Florence Nightingale’s model in Brazil and categorize topics of journalistic articles according to Carper’s and White’s patterns of knowing. Methods: categorical content analysis of materials related to Florence Nightingale, published in Brazil between 1850 and 1919, collected at Hemeroteca Digital. Four analysts identified themes of journalistic article, performing classification in patterns of knowing. Results: there was a predominance of evidence of the sociopolitical pattern followed by the empirical pattern. In the analyses per decade, ethical and aesthetic patterns showed predominance between 1860 and 1870, respectively. Conclusion: White’s classification by nursing patterns of knowing was useful in understanding precursor themes of professional/disciplinary knowledge that spread in Brazil, linked to Nightingale’s character, in addition to the repercussions of her actions and her expanded sociopolitical perspective.
