Water quality and survival rate of Rhamdia quelen fry subjected to simulated transportation at different stock densities and temperatures

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Transportation of live fish is routinely done in aquaculture; therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the water quality and survival rate of Rhamdia quelen fry (2.55±0.44 g) following 4, 8 and 12h of simulated transportation, at stock densities of 30 and 60 fry 5 L -1 and temperatures 15, 20 and 25 o C. Dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, total ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, turbidity, total alkalinity and survival were analyzed. Temperature and time had a significant influence on ammo… Show more

“…The suruvi juveniles were highly resilient to the present study's management conditions, with animals' survival rate in all treatments being higher than more than 99.0%. These findings were consistent with those of previous studies for suruvi (Zaniboni-Filho et al, 2008) and other native catfish (Fracalossi et al, 2004;Bittencourt et al, 2018;Bogiani et al, 2018).…”

“…At the end of the experiment, the fish were slaughtered in a solution of eugenol (60 mg/L), and the morphometric data were registered Water physicochemical parameters in the two experiments were within remained at adequate levels to Rhamdia (Baldisserotto & Radunz Grandson 2004). The temperature was also within thermal comfort limits (15-34°C) for R. quelen fry as recommended by Gomes, Golombieski, Gomes, and Baldisserotto (2000) and Bittencourt et al (2018). Values of dissolved oxygen above 4.3 mg/L are recommended for a better growth of catfish (Ictalurus punctatus and R. quelen) according to Souza, Pouey, Camargo, and Vaz (2005) and R. quelen fry (Bittencourt et al, 2018) and in this study, the dissolved oxygen remained above this values.…”

“…The acidification of transporting water mostly due to the accumulation of carbon dioxide discharged by fish breath (Bittencourt et al, 2018; Treasurer, 2012). Furthermore, regarding the surge of ammonia nitrogen concentration, it is a momentous concern of fish transportation (Lim et al, 2003; Urakawa & Sipos, 2020; Watson et al, 2010).…”
