This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of coriander (Coriandrum sativum) seed powder and extract on the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens. A total of 420 day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were allocated randomly into seven treatments of 60 birds per group. Each treatment had four replicates (15 chicks per replicate). The trial was designed with seven treatments, consisting of a control diet without coriander, this is, the control group (CG); three treatments, which included the control diet plus three levels of coriander extract in water (750, 1000, and 1250 mg/kg); and the another three, which received the control diet plus three levels of coriander powder (1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5%). Performance parameters were monitored throughout the experimental period. At 21 -42 d old, the inclusion of 952 mg/kg of coriander extract in drinking water maximized weight gain, while the feed intake of the experimental period (1 -42 d) was maximized at the coriander powder level of 1.2%. Feed conversion ratios improved with the inclusion of coriander powder in the diet throughout the experimental period. These results suggest that coriander powder in the diet and coriander extract in water could replace synthetic antibiotics and could be regarded as natural feed additives and growth promoters in poultry diets.

The development of antibiotic resistant pathogens has resulted from the use of sub-therapeutic concentrations of antibiotics delivered in poultry feed. Furthermore, there are a number of consumer concerns regarding the use of antibiotics in food animals including residue contamination of poultry products and antibiotic resistant bacterial pathogens. These issues have resulted in recommendations to reduce the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in livestock in the United States. Unlike conventional production, organic systems are not permitted to use antibiotics. Thus, both conventional and organic poultry production need alternative methods to improve growth and performance of poultry. Herbs, spices, and various other plant extracts are being evaluated as alternatives to antibiotics and some do have growth promoting effects, antimicrobial properties, and other health-related benefits. This review aims to provide an overview of herbs, spices, and plant extracts, currently defined as phytobiotics as potential feed additives.

RESUMO.A busca por alimentos seguros e por produtos de origem animal que respeitem os critérios de bem-estar e o meio ambiente ganhou força na última década. Nesse contexto, pesquisas que visam à substituição dos antimicrobianos nas dietas dos animais são desenvolvidas com a finalidade de reduzir problemas econômicos, sanitários e fornecer produtos seguros e de qualidade ao consumidor. Dentre eles estão os probióticos, prebióticos, simbióticos, enzimas, acidificantes e aditivos fitogênicos, que modificam, por estímulo, a biota natural ou inibem por maior competitividade, de uma maneira menos agressiva, a biota intestinal patogênica, promovendo um melhor equilíbrio do meio gastrointestinal e favorecendo a absorção dos nutrientes. Os aditivos fitogênicos são substâncias derivadas de plantas medicinais ou de especiarias, que têm efeito positivo sobre a produção e a saúde dos animais. Estes aditivos podem atuar inibindo o crescimento de microrganismos patogênicos no intestino e melhorar a digestibilidade dos nutrientes. É esperado que nos próximos anos mais pesquisas envolvendo o uso de aditivos fitogênicos na alimentação de aves sejam desenvolvidas para que dessa forma haja maior interesse do setor avícola em fazer uso desses aditivos, em substituição aos antimicrobianos e promotores de crescimento vigentes. O uso de aditivos fitogênicos na avicultura pode ser viável uma vez que possibilita melhores resultados de desempenho e digestibilidade, e permite uma melhoria na viabilidade criatória com consequente melhor índice de eficiência produtiva, principalmente quando existem condições de desafio sanitário. Desta forma, considerando-se o crescente interesse no uso destes aditivos na alimentação de aves, apresentamos uma revisão sobre os compostos fitogênicos e suas principais fontes utilizadas na alimentação de aves.Palavras chave: Antimicrobianos, antioxidantes, compostos fenólicos, flavonoides. The search for safe food and products of animal origin that meet the wellness criteria and the environment gained momentum in the last decade. Thus, research aimed at the replacement of antimicrobials in animal diets is developed in order to reduce economic problems, health and provide safe and quality products to the consumer. These include probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotic, enzymes, acidifiers and phytogenic additives, which modify, by stimulating the natural biota or inhibit for greater competitiveness, in a less aggressive way, the pathogenic intestinal biota, promoting a better balance of gastrointestinal half and favoring the absorption of nutrients. The additives are phytogenic substances derived from medicinal herbs or spices that have a positive effect on the production and health of the animals. These additives may act to inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms in the intestine and improve the digestibility of nutrients.
