Heat stress is one of the main factors affecting egg production. One way to improve egg production is physical processing of the feed ingredients, allowing for better utilization of nutrients. In this study, the relationship between the corn particle size, measured as the geometric mean diameter (GMD), and thermoregulation was evaluated by determining the effect of the GMD on performance, egg quality, and physiological responses. Feed intake, eggshell quality (weight and thickness), rectal temperature (T R), respiratory rate (R R), and surface temperature (T S) were recorded in sixty 20-week-old naked neck laying hens that were fed corn of different particle sizes. Ambient temperature (T A) was also recorded during the trial. The GMD of corn particles was determined using a screens granulometer, resulting in sizes of 605, 1,030, and 2,280 μm. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of a completely randomized design showed a significant effect (P < 0.05) of GMD on feed intake, shell weight, and shell thickness. The ANOVA performed by the least squares method showed a highly significant effect (P < 0.01) of GMD on T R and R R. T A, categorized into three classes (24.0-26, 26.1-28.9, and 29.0-31.0 °C), had a significant effect (P < 0.01) on T R and T S. The interaction between the GMD of corn particles and the T A classes was not statistically significant. Coarser corn particles cause an increase in the rectal temperature of naked neck hens, and these birds increase their respiratory rate to dissipate excess metabolic heat. This increase in the respiratory rate causes a decrease in the eggshell quality.
Phytogenic additives in broilers chicken nutrition: essential oils and spicesABSTRACT. The search for safe food and products of animal origin that meet the wellness criteria and the environment gained momentum in the last decade. Thus, research aimed at the replacement of antimicrobials in animal diets is developed in order to reduce economic problems, health and provide safe and quality products to the consumer. These include probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotic, enzymes, acidifiers and phytogenic additives, which modify, by stimulating the natural biota or inhibit for greater competitiveness, in a less aggressive way, the pathogenic intestinal biota, promoting a better balance of gastrointestinal half and favoring the absorption of nutrients. The additives are phytogenic substances derived from medicinal herbs or spices that have a positive effect on the production and health of the animals. These additives may act to inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms in the intestine and improve the digestibility of nutrients. It is expected that in coming years more research involving the
The feed is one of the most important factors in animal production, either at cost or for animal response due to the quality of the feed. In poultry nutrition several strategies can be used to promote the improvement, or by changing formulation or even in the processing of feeds. The processes commonly used in the feed for poultry industry are pelleting, extrusion or expansion in order to promote the different physical forms, namely, pelleted, extruded feeds, expanded, or simply expanded extruded unstructured. The advantages and disadvantages of processing can be listed in different levels of production, from the feed mill itself to the performance of the animals. The main difference between the processed and unprocessed feed is the improvement in digestibility caused by the gelatinization process that occur when the feed is subjected to elevated temperature, pressure at a particular time directly affecting the quality of feed. Thus, considering that feed processing burdening cost to the producer, however feed processed reduce the act of poultry in selecting larger particles, resulting in less wastage of feed and improved animal time use for food compared to mash feeds, we present a
Physicochemical and sensory characteristics of poultry and eggsABSTRACT. The poultry sector can be considered one of the most developed and technified of world agriculture. Advances in genetic improvement together with the development of nutrition, health and management techniques, resulted in the current poultry farming, high efficiency and organization in order to produce animal protein of high biological value for human consumption at low cost. Commercial egg is a product of an efficient biological transformation made by laying hen and is one of the most complete foods that exists is composed of proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals. The egg composition depends on several factors. It notes that the bird's age affects only the egg size and shell quality, but not in its composition. The protein composition of the diet influences, fatty acids and cholesterol content of the yolk. In turn, when it comes to poultry coming soon in mind the white meat, with high humidity and protein obtained from chickens raised in conventional farming systems; so, high density and rapid growth. However, poultry meat is any arising meat from...
