Evaluation of some oxidative-stress and antioxidant markers in goats during estrous cycle under Egyptian environmental conditions

Abstract: The objective of this study was to explore the impact of thermal stress on hormonal level and antioxidant activity in goats during various phases of the estrous cycle in the Egyptian summer. Forty cycling does were allocated to two groups (20 animals each) divided by season (mild/hot). Daily meteorological, rectal temperature, and respiratory rate data were recorded in the two seasons. The estrous cycle of the goats was synchronized by two intramuscular injections of 5 mg of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) at 11-day… Show more

“…Oxidative stress (OS) is caused either by an increase in pro-oxidants (highly reactive free radicals species) or decrease in the antioxidants, or both [46]. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is as naturally occurring product of lipid peroxidation which reflects the amount of pro-oxidants and thus used as an important OS marker [47]. GSH-Px and SOD are endogenously produced essential components of first-line defense antioxidants which provide protection against reactive oxygen species (ROS).…”

“…This was due to the decrease in air temperature and humidity as altitude increases. Teama (14) reported that THI has an effect on oxidative stress. Kumar et al (23) noticed that oxidative stress increases in goats during the summer season.…”

“…However, heat stress results in the excessive production of free radicals (13). Since it also causes a decrease in the antioxidant defense system, it results in oxidative stress, which can cause tissue pathologies by damaging macromolecules of healthy cells including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), lipids and proteins (2,14). Moreover, altitude can affect the antioxidant defense system and lead to oxidative stress.…”

“…Normally, in the body, there is an equilibrium between the antioxidant defence system and the generation of lipid peroxidation-inducing free oxygen radicals, which is referred to as the oxidative balance [6][7][8] . The disrupt of this balance between oxidants and antioxidants in favour of the former is described as oxidative stress [9][10][11] . On human and animal diseases oxidative stress plays a significant role [12] .…”
