Composition proximate, bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of Butia capitata

Abstract: Butia capitata, native to the Brazilian cerrado, is underutilized for human consumption. The objective was to determine the physical characteristics of the fruit, centesimal composition, bioactive and antioxidant activity. Fruits obtained in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Diameter, height and weight were evaluated. The moisture was analyzed by gravimetry after oven drying, ashes by calcining in a muffle furnace, proteins by the Kjeldahl method, gravimetric lipids after extraction in ethyl ether, carbohyd… Show more

“…Studies on the extraction and characterization of oils from Butia kernels (BUK) are scarce because they are small, hard, and challenging to handle. On the other hand, it represents a potential oil source as it shows a high oil yield ranging from 32 to 54% [52,53].…”

“…is the fruit of a palm tree of the genus Butia, of the Arecaceae family, which occurs naturally in South America and is on the list of endangered species in Brazil, where it shows potential for income generation (Hoffmann et al, 2014). The pulp of this fruit is rich in bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity, such as ß-carotene and vitamin E, and has a high concentration of vitamin C (Barbosa et al, 2021). However, the widespread consumption of the fresh fruit is hindered by its high acidity, fibrous texture, and low sugar content, requiring processing to enhance its quality for a higher consumer acceptance and, consequently, to improve its shelf life throughout the year, which is important since this is a highly perishable seasonal fruit (Hoffmann et al, 2017).…”

“…Nowadays, food consumption does not only consider calories and main nutrition but also other specific health effects, including antioxidants, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immune-enhancing nutrients, blood glucose lowering, and so on (Barbosa et al, 2021;Eor et al, 2021;Iwansyah et al, 2021). Plants, including vegetables and herbs, have been used as an important source of bioactive compounds and ingredients for functional food (Mazahir et al, 2022;Wang et al, 2022).…”
