BRS Notável: a medium-early-maturing, disease-resistant Carioca common bean cultivar with high yield potential

Abstract: BRS Notável is a common bean cultivar with carioca grain, suitable for cultivation in 20 Brazilian states. It is a mediumearly-maturing cultivar, with an average yield of 2,261 kg ha -1 , 8.5% higher than the controls, a high yield potential (4,472 kg ha -1 ), lodging tolerance and resistance to anthracnose, fusarium wilt, common bacterial blight, and curtobacterium wilt.

“…On the other hand, consumers are interested only in the traits related to grain quality. Therefore, the main breeding programs that work with the common bean crop in Brazil have devoted great effort to obtaining lines that meet all the goals mentioned (Abreu et al, 2007;Melo et al, 2010 andPereira et al, 2012).…”

“…Four segregating populations were generated by crossing the slow seed coat darkening parent BRSMG Madrepérola (Carneiro et al, 2012) with four normal seed coat darkening parents: cultivars BRS Estilo (Melo et al, 2010), BRS Cometa (Faria et al, 2008), BRS Notável (Pereira et al, 2012) and BRS Sublime (Table 1). The parents BRS Estilo and BRS Cometa were chosen because they exhibit short and long cooking times, respectfully.…”

“…For the carioca (beige seed coat with brown stripes) market class, there are as yet few cultivars with this early maturity trait, such as Carioca Precoce, BRS 9435 Cometa (Faria et al 2008), BRS Notável (Pereira et al 2012), IPR Colibri, IPR Curió, IAC Imperador (Chiorato et al 2012), and TAA Gol. Nevertheless, these cultivars are classified as semi-early (75 to 84 days) or early (65 to 74 days), but none of them is considered super-early (<65 days).…”

“…Some traits are developed to meet regional demands, but early maturity, plant architecture, and bean grain size and color are important in all regions (Melo et al 2010). Early maturity allows savings on water and power in irrigated systems, greater flexibility in management of production systems, use of shorter sowing periods to advance or delay the traditional sowing time currently spent for normal maturity cultivars, harvest outside the peak bean grain supply period, and avoidance of pests and diseases and drought periods (Pereira et. al.…”
