Use of a Mycoplasma suis-PCR protocol for screening a population of captive peccaries (Tayassu tajacu and Tayassu pecari)

Abstract: Mycoplasma suis is a hemotropic bacteria of red blood cells and the causative agent of swine eperythrozoonosis. Diagnosis of infection may be reached by direct examination of blood smears; however, the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the 16S RNA gene of M. suis improves the sensitivity and specificity of detection. The aim of this study was to screen peccaries (Tayassu tajacu and T. pecari) for M. suis infection using a specific conventional PCR. A total of 28 blood samples from captive colla… Show more

“…appear to have co-evolved with many animal species. The development of molecular assays, primarily targeting the 16S rRNA gene of these microbes, has resulted in the recent recognition of several novel animal and human hemoplasmas [15,17-19,44-47]. This study represents the first report of a novel, and as yet incompletely characterized hemotropic Mycoplasma species in little brown bats, with an overall prevalence of 47%.…”

“…Blood DNA samples from 22 captive collared peccaries ( Tayassu tajacu ) and six white‐lipped peccaries ( Tayassu pecari ) that were previously negative by a cPCR for Myc. suis (Vieira et al. 2011) were also analysed.…”

“…A standard curve constructed with plasmid (pGEM Promega) was also included with four dilutions points from 2.96x10 5 to 2.96x10 2 . Although peccaries may be potential reservoirs of infectious diseases, captive animals from the present study were also previously negative for Mycoplasma suis by PCR (VIEIRA et al, 2011).…”

“…Accordingly, the aim of this study was to identify the PCV2 in whole blood samples by conventional and quantitative PCR (qPCR) of previously surveyed approved under IBAMA and ethical committee for other pathogens (VIEIRA et al, 2011) of adults captive peccaries from Curitiba Zoo in Paraná State, Brazil (16 collared and 6 white-lipped).…”
