The objective was to evaluate the equipment efficiency in reducing drift and increasing the spray deposition. The experiment was conducted of the conilon coffee plantation, located on the experimental area of the Federal Institute of Espirito Santo, Itapina, Brazil. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments consisted: a knapsack sprayer with electrostatic assistance, an electric knapsack sprayer, a knapsack sprayer with a spray shield, and a knapsack sprayer without a spray shield. All sprayers were equipped with a single spray nozzle. Spray deposition was evaluated on wee leaves using a food colourant as a tracer. The knapsack sprayer with electrostatic assistance was the most efficient equipment, providing lower values of drift, and the greatest deposition on the weeds. It is recommended to use the electrostatic sprayer, as it showed greater efficiency in the application of the product on the target, using smaller volume

Plutella xylostella (traça-das-crucíferas) é a principal praga que danifica a couve (Brassica oleracea L.) e, quando mal controlada, pode comprometer toda a produção. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar um diagnóstico das práticas de controle da P. xylostella adotadas pelos agricultores familiares que cultivam couve nos municípios de Lucas do Rio Verde, Sorriso e Sinop, visando gerar conhecimento que eleve o consumo de hortaliças, como alimentos promotores de saúde. Esses municípios somados, produzem 143 toneladas de couve, sendo quase em sua totalidade produzido por agricultores familiares. Foram selecionados 42 produtores que responderam ao questionário proposto e verificou-se que o método de controle mais utilizado é o químico, seguido do biológico. Com relação ao controle químico, ele ocorre com o uso de 28 produtos comerciais, sendo apenas 10 registrados, e essa atividade expõe os produtores ao contato direto com agrotóxicos durante a aplicação dos produtos. Aliado a isso, os EPIs ainda foram utilizados indevidamente, embora conheçam sua importância. Controles alternativos, como o uso de extratos botânicos e/ou componentes alternativos são conhecidos, mas pouco utilizados e são várias as dificuldades relatadas para controlar a traça.

Influence of working pressure and spray nozzle on the distribution of spray liquid in manual backpack sprayers

Manual backpack sprayers are widely used in rural properties in Brazil. However, studies that assess their working characteristics, especially spray tip models and working pressure conditions, are scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess how much the working pressure and spray tips influence the distribution quality of phytosanitary spray solutions in manual backpack sprayers. Four spray nozzles (standard flat-fan Magnojet TP11002, turbo flat-fan TeeJet TT11002, hollow-cone TeeJet TXA8002, and disc-core) were assessed in a patternator table at 1, 2, 3, and 4 bar. Analyses of spray distribution profile were performed by symmetry and the coefficient of variation (CV) analysed by the Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). Spray tip models and working pressure influenced in more than 100% the distribution uniformity values of spray solution and in about 50% the useful range of the phytosanitary treatment. Among the models assessed in this study, the turbo flat-fan spray nozzle presents the best set of characteristics to be indicated for manual backpack sprayers aiming at field phytosanitary treatments.
