Genetic gain evaluated with selection indices and with REML/Blup in popcornAbstract -The objective of this work was to compare four selection indices and the REML/Blup method in the evaluation of the predicted genetic gains for the characteristics of interest to the breeding program of the UENF 14 popcorn. Two hundred full-sib progenies were evaluated in one season, in two locations (North and Northwest Regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), with two replicates, totaling 800 observations. The characteristics evaluated were average plant height, average height of first ear insertion, final stand, tipping, stem diameter, prolificacy, grain yield and popping expansion. Among the selection indices tested, Mulamba & Mock's provided the best results for selection of full-sib progenies. The REML/Blup method proved to be very efficient, selecting progenies with high relative performance and better predicted genetic gains than those of the selection indices tested. The progenies selected using the REML/Blup method, for highest grain yield, are not the same as those selected for higher popping expansion. The Mulamba & Mock index and the REML/ Blup method provide the best predicted gains for the UENF 14 population.
Zea mays L.. ABSTRACT -Knowledge of the direction and degree of association between two or more characteristics may contribute to increase efficiency in the selection of superior genotypes. The aim of this study was to evaluate phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations, as well as the direct and indirect effects of path analysis, for the most suitable selection, using expansion capacity and its primary and secondary components, in diallel hybrids of popcorn. Accordingly, 90 diallel hybrids and a control (IAC 112) were planted both in and out of season in Campos dos Goytacazes, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, following a randomised block design. The characteristics under evaluation were: cycle (CO); plant height (AP); ear height (AE); stem diameter (DC); hundred grain weight (M100); grain expansion capacity (CE); Grain yield (PG); prolificacy (PR); grain length (CG), grain width (LG) and grain thickness (EG). Analysis of the phenotypic (rf), genotypic (rg) and environmental (ra) correlations were carried out, followed by breakdown of the simple correlation coefficients obtained from path analysis into their direct and indirect effects on the main variable CE. The results showed a significant high negative genotypic correlation between the EC and PG of -0.67, demonstrating the difficulty of obtaining hybrids with both a high EC and PG. The variables M100 and PG have the grea...
The failure to obtain the ideal stand is one of the causes of decreased crop yields, in this sense it is important to investigate the genetic effects related to seed quality. The aim of this study was to measure the general combining ability (GCA), the specific combining ability (SCA) and the reciprocal effects (RE) for popcorn seed quality in addition to evaluate the association between germination and vigor tests with field emergencein order to identify hybrids with better germination and vigour. Ten inbred lines were evaluated using a complete diallel cross with reciprocals. Seed quality was measured by germination tests (GT) and by modified cold vigour tests (MCV). In the GT, the numbers of strong normal seedlings (SNS), weak normal (WNS), abnormal (AS) and ungerminated seeds (UGS) were counted. In the MCV, the numbers of normal seedlings (NPC), abnormal (ASC) and ungerminated seeds (UGSC) were counted, and the plants' dry matter (DM) was measured. Analysis of variance for GCA, SCA and RE were significant for all variables. The quadratic components for SCA were higher than those for GCA for the SNS, AS, UGS, ASC and UGSC traits, which indicates higher significance for the non-additive effects. The most favourable GCA estimates, were found in lines P3 and L70. The best hybrids were P1xL70, P3xP6 and P8xL70. The RE results showed that L70 and P3 should be used as the female parent in the P1xL70 and P3xP6 hybrid crosses, respectively. The MCV was the test that was most strongly correlated with field emergence, with a magnitude of 0.667. Index terms:General and specific combining ability, maternal effect, germination and vigour. As melhores combinações híbridas: P1xL70,...
The aim of this work was to compare methods of determining the leaf area of guava (leaf discs and scanned images) and to model leaf area as a function of linear dimensions. Four areas of guava ‘Paluma’ were selected (12, 15, 20 and 24 months of age) for the experiment in the municipality of Pedro Canário, ES, Brazil. We randomly collected samples from 15 plants in each area. Ten leaves were chosen among the lower, middle and upper thirds of each plant to ensure that leaves of all sizes were collected, for a total of 600 leaves. Subsequently, we determined the leaf area by the methods of digital imaging and leaf discs. Linear regression analysis and correlation analysis were used to compare the methods. Linear, quadratic and power models of leaf area, as a function of the length or width and/or the product of length and width were adjusted. The methods of leaf discs and scanned images are discordant. The method of digitised images was a better fit to the width of the leaf, while the method of leaf discs was a better fit for length.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity/phytotoxicity of herbicides (mesotrione, nicosulfuron, and tembotrione) using the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II associated with biometric analyses. The experiment was conducted using three popcorn genotypes (BRS Angela, IAC-125 and UENF-14) and three herbicides (mesotrione, tembotrione and nicosulfuron, and a control treatment "WITH WEEDING?". The quantum yield of photosystem II was obtained through a modulated light portable fluorometer MINI-PAM, from the chlorophyll a fluorescence. Regarding the biometric analyses, the following characteristics were evaluated: a) number medium of ears of the corn, b) grain yield in kg ha -1 , c) average weight of 100 grains, and d) popping expansion. The genotypes were sensitive to tembotrione with higher intensity for the IAC -125. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II showed useful tool for studies of selectivity/phytotoxicity symptoms of herbicides used.
The uniformity and droplet size produced during the spraying as well the correct deposition of these in the target, contribute directly to the success of a pesticide application. The objective of the present study was to characterize the ejected spray in the aerial and terrestrial spraying of pumpkin crops, with the use of adjuvants in a liquid solution. The experiment was carried out in two commercial plantations, in an entirely randomized design, employing a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, with six forms of application and two liquid compositions. The droplet spectrum was assessed employing water-sensitive card imaging. Smaller drop sizes and relative amplitudes were produced by aerial applications. In turn, the largest droplet diameters and the lowest percentage of drops smaller than 100 μm were obtained when using air induction twin flat spray nozzles. The adjuvant did not interfere in the numerical and volumetric median diameters, the relative amplitude, or the volume rate of droplets smaller than 100 μm.
