Origins of the Coronary Arteries and Their Significance

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To describe the normal and variant anatomy of the coronary artery ostia in Indian subjects.INTRODUCTION:Anomalous coronary origins may cause potentially dangerous symptoms, and even sudden death during strenuous activity. A cadaveric study in an unsuspected population provides a basis for understanding the normal variants, which may facilitate determination of the prevalence of anomalies and evaluation of the value of screening for such anomalies.METHODS:One hundred and five heart specimens were diss… Show more

“…Normally, the coronary ostia are located above the free margins of the aortic cusps within the sinus of Valsalva and below sinutubular ridge 1,5,6 . This location of ostium below sinutubular ridge is important for maximum coronary diastolic filling 7 .…”

“…Some anomalies of the coronary arteries can also cause sudden death especially in young athletes. 8 Hence t horough knowledge of normal and variant anatomy of coronary arteries is a prerequisite for clinicians to treat congenital, acquired, metabolic or degenerative heart diseases. 3 Present study was conducted in 60 specimens and right coronary dominance was observed in 55 cases (91.7%) which is similar with other studies.…”

“…The initial portion of the aortic root, which houses the leaflets of the aortic valve, is occupied by the aortic sinuses, also called the sinuses of Valsalva. [1] The aortic sinuses reach beyond the upper border of the cusp and form a well-defined, complete, and circumferential sinutubular ridge when viewed from the aortic aspect. These sinuses are named according to their position as the anterior, left posterior, and right posterior aortic sinuses.…”

“…The recent introduction of selective coronary arteriography that provides an accurate localization of the anatomical variations and underlying pathology, the advances made in coronary arterial bypass graft surgeries and modern methods of myocardial revascularization makes it imperative that a thorough, sound and complete knowledge of the normal and variant anatomy of origin of coronary arteries and their distance in relation with sinutubular ridge is required, which led to this study. [1] …”
