Feeding behavior and responses in grazing lactating cows supplemented with peanut cake

Abstract: -This experiment was conducted to study the substitution of soybean meal with peanut cake in the supplement by assessing the feeding behavior and the interaction between the thermal environment and the physiological responses of eight crossbred cows with an average live weight of 500 kg. Cows were divided into two 4 × 4 Latin squares and managed on pasture. The peanut cake was included at the levels of 0, 330, 660, and 1,000 g kg −1 in the supplement as a replacement for soybean meal. The feeding behavior vari… Show more

“…By-products from the biofuel industry are among the types of food sources that are lower in cost and have potential use in ruminant feed (Oliveira et al 2015b). Furthermore, the inclusion of cakes from palm fruits in ruminant diets has attracted the attention of the scientific community and stimulated research (Costa et al 2015; Silva et al 2015) on the influence of these products on the production and quality of milk and cheese (Oliveira et al 2015b). Peanut cake is a by-product of the extraction of peanut seed oil and has a high nutritional value, particularly in terms of the levels of protein (41–45%) and lipids (8–9%) (Abdalla et al 2008; Oliveira et al 2013; Gonzaga Neto et al 2015).…”

“…The inclusion of cakes from palm fruits in ruminant diets has attracted the attention of the scientific community and stimulated research [3,4,5] on the influence of these new feedstuffs on production and quality of milk and cheese [4,6,7]. Palm kernel cake, a byproduct of this industrial process of Oil palm cultivation ( Elaeis guineensis ), has been used in ruminant feed because it is a low cost supplement in relation to traditional ingredients (corn and soybean), and it has a reasonable total digestible nutrients concentration (65% to 70%) [8].…”
