Aim: To evaluate histometrically the effect of low and high caloric value of ethanol on ligatureinduced bone loss in female rats. Methods: Sixty female rats were divided into five groups of 12 animals each: Normal Control (water), Test A (low ethanol), Control A (low iso), Test B (high ethanol) and Control B (high iso). Control Groups A and B received diets with the same amount of calories consumed by Test Groups A and B, respectively, with ethanol replaced by isocaloric amounts of carbohydrate. Four weeks prior to the end of the experimental period, half of the rats in each group were randomly assigned to receive a ligature on mandibular molar, whereas the other half of group was left unligated. At 8 weeks, the animals were sacrificed, and the specimens were processed to obtain decalcified sections. The area of periodontal ligament and/or bone loss in the furcation region of the first molars was histometrically measured in five sections per specimen (mm²). Results: Ethanol intake did not have effect on the alveolar bone loss in unligated teeth (p>0.05). However, in ligature-induced periodontitis, high value of calories associated with ethanol feeding enhanced the area of bone loss (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated that a low-ethanol diet did not affect the periodontium, while a high-ethanol diet may aggravate the progression of periodontitis, as demonstrated by the increased furcation region bone destruction in periodontal disease.

The aim of this study was to investigate different periods of estrogen replacement therapy onset on the progression of experimental periodontitis in ovariectomized rats. divided into two groups, experimental and control that received 17ß estradiol or vehicle, respectively. Each treatment immediately, one, two, three and four weeks after the ovariectomy. A month after ovariectomy, a cotton ligature was placed around the maxillary second microscopic and histometric aspects of the periodontal area were analyzed. The results indicated that estrogenresorption of alveolar bone adjacent to the maxillary second molar roots, once no differences between test and control groups were detected. Cada grupo foi subdividido em cinco subgrupos, os quais iniciaram o tratamento imediatamente, uma, duas, três e quatro semanas após a ovariectomia. Um dos segundos molares superiores. Trinta e cinco dias após microscópicos e histomorfométricos da região periodontal. estrógeno não possui efeito direto sobre a reabsorção do osso alveolar adjacente às raízes dos segundo molares, uma vez que não houve diferença entre os grupos experimental e controle. Dentro das limitações deste estudo concluiuse que a terapia de reposição de estrógeno não retardou a progressão da periodontite induzida.

ResumoIntrodução: Os contraceptivos são amplamente utilizados pelas mulheres em grande parte do mundo. O estresse associado a sua utilização pode conduzir respostas adversas no organismo. Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos do estresse crônico associado ou não com o uso de contraceptivos na progressão de periodontite induzida por ligadura em ratas Lewis. Material e método: Para tanto, quarenta ratas foram divididas aleatoriamente em 5 grupos (n = 8): Grupo Contraceptivo e Ligadura (CG); Grupo Estresse e Ligadura (SG); Grupo Contraceptivo, Estresse e Ligadura (CSG); Grupo Ligadura (LG); e Grupo Controle (CtrlG). Um contraceptivo injetável foi administrado nos grupos CG e CSG no início do experimento. No dia seguinte, a periodontite foi induzida nos grupos CG, SG, LG e CSG, através da colocação de ligaduras no segundo molar superior direito destes animais. No terceiro dia, o SG e o CSG foram submetidos a um modelo de estresse crônico usando contenção física e exposição ao frio. Após 60 dias, os animais foram sacrificados e submetidos a medidas histométricas. Foram considerados dois parâmetros: perda de inserção histológico (CEJ-PL) e perda óssea (CEJ-BC). Resultado: Os resultados indicaram que o CtrlG (CEJ-PL 0,10 ± 0,00; CEJ-BC 0,34 ± 0,02) apresentaram os valores mais baixos (p<0,05). O grupo SG (CEJ-PL 0,90 ± 0,24; CEJ-BC 1,30 ± 0,28) apresentou valores mais elevados que foram significativamente diferentes (p<0,05) dos resultados do LG. Os outros grupos apresentaram resultados estatísticos semelhantes (p>0,05). Conclusão: Os resultados deste estudo não permitem uma avaliação da susceptibilidade dos animais à periodontite induzida por ligadura.
