Two new species of Hypostomus Lacépède (Teleostei: Loricariidae) from the upper rio Paraná basin, Central Brazil

Abstract: Two new species of Hypostomus Lacépède (Teleostei: Loricariidae) from the rio Paranaíba and rio Grande basins, both in the upper rio Paraná basin, central Brazil, are described herein. One of them is distinguished from all congeners, except H. albopunctatus, by having the pectoral-fin spine length equal to or smaller than the pelvic-fin spine. From H. albopunctatus, it is distinguished by having round dark spots (vs. pale) on body and fins. The second species is distinguished from all congeners, except H. mult… Show more

“…In fact, a revision of several populations of H. paulinus is in progress by CHZ and more new species could be revealed under the current name of Hypostomus paulinus. Zawadzki et al (2008b) (Zawadzki et al, 2008a;Martins & Langeani, 2011;Martins et al, 2013;Calegari & Reis, 2010;Martins & Langeani, 2012, respectively).…”

“…Methodology and terminology of measurements follow Boeseman (1968), modified by Weber (1985) and Zawadzki et al (2008). Osteological observations were based on the skeleton of one specimen, which was dehydrated in ethanol and cleaned in a dermestarium.…”

“…Body measurements are given as percents of the standard length (SL), except when noted; subunits of the head are given as percents of head length (HL). Counts followed Armbruster (2003) and Zawadzki et al (2008b), with the addition of ventral plates along the anal-fin base. Vertebrae counts included five from the Weberian apparatus, and the compound caudal centrum was counted as a single element.…”

“…Hypostomus La Cépède is the most speciesrich genus within the family Loricariidae, comprising 140 valid species according to Armbruster (2004), Armbruster et al (2007), and recent descriptions (Zawadzki et al, 2008a(Zawadzki et al, , 2008bCarvalho et al, 2010), occurring widely throughout the neotropics. The high intraspecific variation in its morphology results in many nominal species with unclear status in Hypostomus (Weber, 2003;Birindelli et al, 2007;Jerep et al, 2007).…”
