A synthesis concerning fishes from Upper Paraná River basin is presented, based on data from fish-collections, literature, and new field samples. Three hundred and ten species, pertaining to 11 orders and 38 families, are referred to the drainage, elevating anterior estimates. Concerning total species, 236 (76.1%) are autochthonous, 67 (21.6%) are allochthonous, and seven (2.3%) are exotic. Principal causes of occurrence of non-native species are: a) dispersal from the Lower Paraná, after the construction of Itaipu dam, and b) escapes from aquaculture farms. Most species (65%) are small-sized, having less than 21 cm of length, and the great majority occurs only in headwaters and small streams. One of the best known and most studied in Brazil, Upper Paraná ichthyofauna richness is far from reaching actual numbers, considering the exponential elevation of species presented herein. Indeed, in the last years various new species have been described and around 50 other species, already recognized as new, are now under description. The improvement on the knowledge about Upper Paraná ichthyofauna is proportional to the number of researchers involved with studies in the area and, unequivocally, reflects recent initiatives stimulating and incrementing taxonomic research, and also improving access to fish collections and to poor or never-sampled areas. However, if we are going to maintain the number of species descriptions per year of last decade, the 50 new species already recognized, will be described only in the next ten years, a period too long. In consequence it is very important that scientific community and grant agencies find and offer initiatives in order to elevate the number of new taxa descriptions per year.Keywords: fishes, freshwater, southeasten Brazil, inventory, transposition. Dentre as espécies da área, 236 (76,1%) são autóctones, 67 (21,6%) alóctones e sete (2,3%) exóticas. As principais causas de ocorrência de espécies não nativas (alóctones e exóticas) foram a dispersão a partir do baixo Paraná, após a construção do Reservatório de Itaipu e o escape de pisciculturas. A fish survey in 35 stream reaches (from 1 st to 3 rd order) with physicochemical and habitat assessment in the São José dos Dourados system, southeastern Brazil, was conducted. Most of the basin land cover (77.4%) is used for pasture. From the sampled stream reaches, 24 were of good physicochemical quality, 10 of fair quality, and only one of poor quality. A habitat assessment showed that 10 stream reaches were considered fair, 22 were poor, and 3 were very poor. Fifty species were collected and their abundances showed strong correlation with habitat descriptors. In addition to the correlation between fish abundance and habitat, some species also showed optimal distribution related to the degree of physical habitat conservation. Streams located in this region experience organic pollution, but the most important aspect is the decline of the instream physical habitat condition, especially in first order streams, which negatively affects coarse substrates and water column dependent fish species. Effluent control, riparian vegetation restoration programs, siltation control and adequate sustainable soil use are practices which could mitigate such impacts. RESUMOIctiofauna de riachos, qualidade da água e do hábitat em uma bacia hidrográfica dominada por pastagens, Sudeste do Brasil A ictiofauna de 35 trechos de riachos (de 1ª a 3ª ordem) no sistema do Rio São José dos Dourados, Sudeste do Brasil, foi estudada juntamente com a avaliação físico-química e física do hábitat. Na região estudada, 77,4% do solo é utilizado para pastagens. Quanto à avaliação físico-química da água, 24 trechos foram classificados como bons, 10 como regulares e um como pobre; quanto à avaliação física do hábitat, 10 foram considerados regulares, 22 como pobres e 3 como muito pobres. Cinqüenta espécies foram coletadas e suas abundâncias apresentaram forte correlação com descritores do hábitat. Em adição a esta correlação, observou-se que algumas espécies também demonstraram sua distribuição ótima coincidente com o grau de conservação do hábitat físico. Os riachos dessa região estão expostos a impactos provenientes de poluição orgânica, mas especialmente pequenos riachos de primeira ordem estão seriamente afetados pela perda de qualidade física do hábitat, que, negativamente, afeta tanto espécies de peixes dependentes de substratos rochosos como espécies que exploram a coluna d'água. Controle da entrada de efluentes, programas adequados de restauração da vegetação ripária, controle do aporte de sedimento e uso adequado e sustentável do solo são práticas que podem mitigar tais impactos. ResumoStream fishes of the Morro do Diabo State Park, Upper Paraná River basin, SP. A survey of the fish species in the streams of the Morro do Diabo State Park was performed. Four first and second order streams were sampled and 22 fish species and 1,573 individuals were collected, belonging to five orders and 11 families. A predominance of Order Siluriformes, followed by Characiformes was registered. Based on general aspects of their biology, the fish species were classified in eight guilds. The studied species are able to use several food sources and microhabitats available in these environments, being particularly favored by their small size. An identification key for the species, together with illustrations of their live coloration is provided.Peixes de riacho do Parque Estadual Morro do Diabo, bacia do Alto rio Paraná, SP Neste trabalho foi realizado um levantamento das espécies de peixes de riacho que ocorrem no Parque Estadual Morro do Diabo. Quatro riachos foram amostrados, de primeira a segunda ordem, onde foram coletadas 22 espécies, pertencentes a cinco ordens e 11 famílias, num total de 1.573 indivíduos. Foi registrado o predomínio da Ordem Siluriformes, seguida por Characiformes. Com base em aspectos gerais da biologia das espécies de peixes, as mesmas foram classificadas em oito guildas. De modo geral, as espécies estudadas são capazes de utilizar diversos recursos alimentares e micro-hábitats disponíveis nesses ambientes, sendo particularmente favorecidas pelo pequeno porte apresentado. Chave de identificação e fotos de exemplares recém-coletados de todas as espécies de peixes são fornecidas.

This study was carried out to develop and apply a fish-based biotic integrity index to assess lowland streams in a highly deforested region of the Upper Paraná River basin. Fifty-six first-order segments were randomly selected for environmental and fish evaluation. Because previous analysis had identified the main type of effect on the streams of the region as physical habitat degradation, 22 qualitatively biological attributes were selected and tested over a physical condition gradient between reference and degraded sites. Sensitivity and redundancy of each attribute revealed that five metrics were adequate for discriminating higher quality from degraded sites. Of the fifty-six streams assessed, one (2%) was classified as good, four (7%) as fair, ten (18%) as poor, and fortyone (73%) as very poor, indicating that, on a regional scale, many aspects of biological integrity are altered, indicative of serious degradation. Considering that first-order segments amount to 11,000 km in total, it is noticeable that 10,000 km of the stream segments have no more than half of the expected conditions, indicative of poor or very poor biotic integrity conditions. Possible strategies of mitigating this scenario are discussed.

Eighteen 100 m long streams stretches, none of an order higher than three, were sampled in three tributaries (six stream stretches sampled in each one) of the left margin of the main channel of Rio Grande (Rios Turvo, Pardo and Sapucaí) in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Each stream stretch had its midpoint located with a GPS satellite receiver and had its fish fauna sampled via a standardized environmental data and fish collection methodology (primarily utilizing electrofishing) with the aim of providing the following information about each stream: 1) the taxonomic composition of the fish fauna and the contribution of each species in that stream in terms of both number of individuals and biomass; 2) a photographic documentation of the live coloration of representative specimens of each collected species; and 3) the description of each sampled environment, with colored photographic illustrations and details of the main biotic and abiotic parameters. Overall 3,070 fishes were collected, belonging to six orders, 18 families, 44 genera, and 64 species, with a total biomass of 14.3 kg. Of the collected species, approximately 50% were Characiformes, 26.5% Siluriformes, 11% Perciformes, 6% Gymnotiformes, 5% Cyprinodontiformes, and 1.5% Synbranchiformes. The most abundant species in terms of total number of individuals were Astyanax altiparanae (17.4%) and Hypostomus ancistroides (9%); the species with the largest biomasses were Astyanax altiparanae (35%) and Geophagus brasiliensis (9%). In terms of abundance and biomass collected for each family, the Characidae was clearly the predominant family followed by the Loricariidae, and Cichlidae. Among the sampled stream stretches, locality SG6 with 26 species and locality PG4 with three species yielded the highest and lowest richness in terms of species numbers, respectively. This coincides with the values obtained for the ShannonWiener index of specific diversity (H´ = 1.08 and 0.26, respectively). The median species richness for all streams stretches was 12. In the species richness estimate by extrapolation for all 18 sampled stream stretches, a value of 93 species was obtained (with a standard error of three) indicating the need for an additional moderate sampling effort to reach the asymptote of the curve. Of the 64 collected species, four (approximately 6% of the total) are clearly new to science and seven other species (approximately 11% of the total) are of indefinite taxonomic status and require further analysis. Two of the captured species are certainly introduced (approximately 3% of the total). Analysis of the trophic and spatial structure of the studied fish fauna indicates that the 10 numerically dominant species in the sampled streams can be grouped, based on published data, into five guilds that are in decreasing order of numeric importance: nektonic omnivores; benthic invertivores; periphytovores; algivores and benthic omnivores. An identification key for all the species of fish collected during this study is provided.

We compared the fish assemblage structure from streams with different intensities of physical habitat degradation and chemical water pollution by domestic sewage in southeastern Brazil. Eight streams (R1-R8) showing less disturbed or more disturbed conditions of chemical water quality and of physical habitat quality were selected. Cumulative abundance and biomass, combined in ABC plots, revealed (i) biomass curves above the abundance curves, represented by the streams R1-R2 (water and habitat less disturbed) and R5-R6 (water more disturbed and habitat less disturbed), and (ii) biomass curves below the abundance curves, represented by the streams R3-R4 (water less disturbed and habitat more disturbed) and R7-R8 (water and habitat more disturbed). The quantitative structure of the ichthyofauna showed significant correspondence with physical habitat condition but not with chemical water quality. The most significant species to cause the dissimilarity between less disturbed and more disturbed physical habitats was the exotic Poecilia reticulata. Such results indicate that in the focused region-with little influence of industrial pollution, noncritical domestic sewage discharge, and soil predominantly used for pasture-streams with high physical habitat integrity possess a differently structured ichthyofauna than streams with relatively low physical habitat integrity, reinforcing the importance of the physical habitat quality and riparian conservation along these water courses, warranting the conservation of these systems. Indeed, our results also reinforce the importance of including biotic descriptors, particularly of the ichthyo-fauna, in water-monitoring programs designed to reveal signs of human interference.

The structure of the fish communities of a pool and a rapid in the ribeirão Santa Bárbara is described. This stream of 5 th order is a direct tributary of the rio Tietê in the system of the upper rio Paraná. Thirty three species, from nine families and three orders, were referred in the two mesohabitats: the pool with 31 species, and the rapid with 18. Orders Characiformes, Siluriformes, and Perciformes presented the greatest number of species in the two mesohabitats. The families Characidae and Loricariidae were the most specious, followed by Cichlidae in the pool, and by Parodontidae in the rapid. Most species were accidental, 17 in the pool, and 10 in the rapid, and only six were constant in the two mesohabitats. The greatest diversity and evenness occurred in the pool. The seasonal variation for both assemblages was high, with the pool having a high turnover of species that could be due to the proximity with main channel of the rio Tietê.A estrutura das comunidades de peixes de um poço e uma corredeira do ribeirão Santa Bárbara é descrita. Esse é um ribeirão de quinta ordem, afluente direto do rio Tietê no sistema do Alto rio Paraná. Trinta e três espécies, de nove famílias e três ordens, foram capturadas nos dois meso-hábitats: 31 no poço e 18 na corredeira. Characiformes, Siluriformes e Perciformes apresentaram o maior número de espécies nos dois meso-hábitats. As famílias Characidae e Loricariidae foram as mais ricas em espécies, seguidas por Cichlidae, no poço, e por Parodontidae, na corredeira. A maioria das espécies foi acidental, 17 no poço e dez na corredeira; somente seis espécies foram constantes nos dois meso-hábitats. As maiores diversidade e uniformidade ocorreram no poço. A variação sazonal no poço e na corredeira foi alta, com o poço apresentando uma grande substituição de espécies, que pode ser devida à proximidade com o canal principal do rio Tietê.

Dermatonotus muelleri is a forelimbs-head-first burrowing frog that uses its forelimbs for soil removal, and it is the second anuran species known to arch its head downwards at an angle of almost 90°to the longitudinal axis of its body when burrowing. The burrowing behavior of D. muelleri is divided in three stages: head burrowing, body burrowing, and chamber construction. Burrowing in D. muelleri includes construction of a subterranean chamber used for estivation during the dry season. Phylogenetic analysis based on literature survey of burrowing behavior suggested that head-first burrowing behavior has evolved several times in anuran history, forming a convergence complex, and that hindlimbs-first burrowing is a basal behavior.
