A new pale-spotted species of Hypostomus Lacépède (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the rio Tocantins and rio Xingu basins in central Brazil

Abstract: A new species of the genus Hypostomus Lacépède (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from rio Tocantins and rio Xingu basins in central Brazil, is described. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a unique combination of pale blotches over a darker background on head, body and fins, and conspicuous keels on head, predorsal region and lateral plates. Comments on the pale-spotted species of Hypostomus are provided.

“…The genus Hypostomus is one of the most species-rich genus of the order Siluriformes, currently having 125 species (Weber, 2003;Zawadzki et al, 2008;Hollanda Carvalho et al, 2010). Currently, nine nominal species were described based on specimens collected in the rio Paraguay basin.…”

“…Hypostomus La Cépède is the most speciesrich genus within the family Loricariidae, comprising 140 valid species according to Armbruster (2004), Armbruster et al (2007), and recent descriptions (Zawadzki et al, 2008a(Zawadzki et al, , 2008bCarvalho et al, 2010), occurring widely throughout the neotropics. The high intraspecific variation in its morphology results in many nominal species with unclear status in Hypostomus (Weber, 2003;Birindelli et al, 2007;Jerep et al, 2007).…”

“…Both species are from the rio Vermelho, a tributary to upper stretches of the rio Araguaia (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1880;Regan, 1904). More recently, Hypostomus faveolus Zawadzki, Birindelli & Lima, 2008, a honeycomb-spotted species was described from the rio AraguaiaTocantins and rio Xingu basins (Zawadzki et al, 2008).…”
