Fatal case of spotted fever in a patient from Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: Spotted fevers are diseases caused by bacterial agents belonging to the spotted-fever (SF) group of the genus Rickettsia. The first documented case of SF in Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, was reported here. Also, it is the first case described of fatal SF in Northeast region of Brazil. The patient was a resident of Arcoverde municipality and the probable site of infection lies in Sertania municipality, both in Pernambuco State, a semi-arid region of Brazil. The patient had not visited other areas where SF… Show more

“…Additionally, it is possible to hypothesize that those SFR hospitalizations received correct treatment which thus prevented fatal outcomes. Lack of knowledge of such SFR epidemic scenarios is also not uncommon in other areas of the country (9,34,36,48,49,96), and is probably associated with the lack of adequate and timely investigations of patients and in the associated environment, that would allow the conditioning factors of each case to be characterized and defined.…”

“…Without already recognized vectors or detection of Rickettsia in these vectors, it is difficult to characterize the bioagent circulation mechanism involved in such outbreaks (e.g. Oliveira et al 2016aOliveira et al , 2016bOliveira et al , 2017Oliveira et al , 2018. In addition, in recent decades, other potentially pathogenic species of Rickettsia, as well as new species of ticks with vector potential, have been reported from Brazil (e.g.…”
