Detection of HPV DNA and immunohistochemical expression of cell cycle proteins in oral carcinoma in a population of brazilian patients

Abstract: This study investigated the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA and viral types in 33 cases of oral squamous cells carcinoma (OSCC) and compared the immunohistochemical expression of the cell-cycle markers p21 and pRb between cases of the disease with and without HPV. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue and amplified by PCR for the detection of HPV DNA. Viral typing was performed by dot blot hybridization. Immunohistochemistry was performed by the streptavidin-biotin technique. HPV DNA was d… Show more

“…Our samples without cancer were diagnosed as traumatic fibromas, and therefore the high prevalence of HPV in our group without cancer must be a regional characteristic. Brazilian (44,46) and Italian (14) studies of OSCC have reported a higher prevalence of HPV18 than HPV16, which agrees with our results, but does not agree with the majority of studies conducted in other countries where HPV16 is the most prevalent type in oral malignant lesions (16,41,45). Only the OSCC WT and OSCC W groups presented co-infection with both viral types, representing 10% of our malignant oral lesions, which is consistent with data reported by other authors (41,44,47).…”

“…Soares et al (34), found that 11 out of 33 cases (33.33%) were positive for HPV18 (81.81%) or HPV16 (18.19%). Of these, p21 expression was positive in 5 of 11 cases(45.45%); they found no statistically significant association.…”
