Purpose This study aims to analyze how gender, research experience and geography are related to the researchers’ importance in the co-authorship network on management and accounting in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach A social network based on the co-authorship relationships in the papers published in leading Brazilian journals was examined using a logit model to estimate the probability of occupying prevailing positions. Findings The findings showed a network with a high level of fragmentation and a scarcity of authors serving as gatekeepers. Based on the number of directed links and collaboration with influential and well-connected authors, men were more likely to occupy central positions than women. Authors with higher academic degrees tended to establish more links but were more likely to distance from other authors. In terms of geography, authors from more- and less-favored regions may report similar propensity to occupy central positions. Practical implications Decision-makers should consider the importance of strengthening collaboration between different research groups and encourage female participation in broader collaborative networks. Research evaluation bodies should strengthen incentives regarding interinstitutional partnerships. Originality/value Studies on collaborative networks in management and accounting sciences are less common and generally focus on describing the networks. This paper combines social network analysis and econometric procedures to analyze the relationship between demographic and geographical aspects, and distinct network centrality indexes.

RESUMOO presente artigo aborda as dificuldades encontradas por professores durante o processo de orientação de trabalhos de conclusão de curso (TCC´s) de alunos do curso de Administração. Foi desenvolvido um estudo de campo, com dados coletados junto a um universo de 30 docentes do curso de uma instituição privada de ensino superior, tendo 21 questionários retornados em condições de tabulação. O questionário contemplou além da análise do perfil do docente, três aspectos fundamentais para a realização deste tipo de trabalho, que são: o conhecimento em metodologia (aspecto cognitivo), o planejamento de pesquisa (aspecto operacional) e a forma de orientação (aspecto da relação professor-aluno). Os resultados apontam as principais dificuldades inseridas no processo de orientação, que vão desde características dos docentes bem como à forma e o envolvimento dos discentes durante a construção de trabalho. Os resultados, apesar de limitados por uma pequena amostragem, servem de suporte de informação para o processo de planejamento das ações de formação por professores e coordenadores de curso. DIFFICULTIES IN THE ORIENTATION PROCESS OF FINAL GRADUATION PROJECT (FGP): A STUDY WITH THE PROFESSORS OF THE MANAGEMENT COURSE FROM A PRIVATE INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION ABSTRACTThis article discusses the difficulties encountered by professors during the orientation process of final graduation project (FGP) for students of Management Courses. It was developed a field study, with data collected by a universe of 30 teachers of the course of a private institution of higher education, having 21 questionnaires returned in conditions of tab. The questionnaire included in addition to the analysis of the teaching profile, three fundamental aspects to this kind of work, which are: knowledge in methodology (cognitive aspect), the research planning (operational aspect) and orientation (aspect of teacher-student relationships). The results indicate the main difficulties included in the guidance process, ranging from characteristics of professors and the manner and involvement of students during construction work. The results, although limited by a small sample, may provide support information for the process of action planning training for professors and course coordinators.

Interrelation of practices and strategic routines in the performance of university research

Purpose: This study sheds light on the relationship between two perspectives, the strategy-as-practice (SAP) approach and the dynamic aspect of routines. We seek to understand how the interrelationship between practices and routines reflect on university corporate results. Methodology: We conducted a case study in a postgraduate program in management at a not-for-profit university focusing on university research activities. 42 interviews were carried out, 19 observations were made in formal and informal social events and institutional documents were collected from the program and from the governmental body that regulates stricto sensu postgraduate studies in Brazil. Originality: The existing research suggests the approximation of these perspectives – SAP and dynamic routines – and the need to integrate them to deepen the understanding of the strategic phenomenon. Main Results: Our results indicate that program strategies are aligned with regulatory and funding bodies and multiple practices and routines relate to and complement the range of research performance outcomes. Academic training, previous experiences and specific skills influence the behavior of actors, while tools and interactions play crucial roles in conducting research, shaping approaches and results, essential in academic research. Theoretical contributions: The article contributes through understandings about the existence of different interdependent and complementary relationships in the strategic process of a postgraduate program that condition the behavior of the actors involved and the research performance achieved.
