Contents of total phenolics and flavonoids in and antioxidant activity of Ilex paraguariensis leaves

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate different solvents and times in the ultrasound-assisted extraction of polyphenols, in order to quantify the total phenolic and flavonoid contents in and the antioxidant activity of mate (Ilex paraguariensis) leaves. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 8x3 (solvent x time of extraction) factorial arrangement. The solvent extractors were distilled water and aqueous solutions of ethanol, acetone, and methanol, acidified or not with hydr… Show more

“…e antioxidant activity 4 Journal of Food Quality and the ability of samples to scavenge free radicals were evaluated by three methods, and the results are expressed as IC 50 mg/mL (Table 4). Large differences were found in their antioxidant activity, which are related to their chemical composition, especially, the total phenolic and flavonoids contents [17,48,49]. e results showed a strong free radical scavenging by DPPH assay with IC 50 ranging between 0.02 ± 0.001 mg/mL in sample S6 from Al-Khalil and 1.13 ± 0.054 mg/mL in sample S8 from Ramallah.…”

“…The total polyphenol content of the different samples was estimated using the method described by Singleton and Tsai. 16 This method consists of mixing 0.1 mL of Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (25 %) and 0.1 mL of vinegar. The mixture was stirred vigorously using the vortex, and 2 mL of sodium carbonate solution (2 %) were added.…”
