Clinical Significance of Preoperative Neutrophil – to - Lymphocyte Ratio in Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Introduction:We investigated the prognostic significance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio on tumor stage and Fuhrman nuclear grade in renal cell carcinoma. Methods:The records of 432 patients with RCC who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy between 2005 and 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified as group lower tumor stage(T1 + T2) and higher(T3 + T4). As like tumor stage, Fuhrman nuclear grade were classified lower (G1+G2) and higher(G3+G4) too. The best NLR cut off value was 3.0… Show more

“…10 Most of the studies about NLR and RCC are about the prognosis, the clinical diagnosis and importance is limited in the literature. Otunctemur et al 3 reported that NLR was higher in patients with advanced stage and high grade (T3-4, G3-4) than the others. The authors found similar results; NLR value was significantly higher in patients with advanced disease and high grade of RCC.…”

“…2 RCC is predominantly seen in males and is diagnosed between 50 and 70 years of age. 3 Studies have shown that inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of RCC, 2 and that neutrophils and platelets have a prominent role in the inflammation of tumors and immunology. 4 Neutrophils can induce tumor growth and remodel the extracellular matrix for metastasis.…”

“…As for the studies conducted in our country, a study by Kaynar et al (27) on 291 patients with bladder tumor reported a positive correlation between tumor size and invasion and preoperative NLR. Similarly, Otunctemur et al (28), in their series of 432 patients where they assessed surgical specimens obtained from RCC patients found a statistically significant relationship of NLR values with high tumor stage and nuclear grade. Nevertheless, in a study by Yıldırım et al (29), the researchers could not find a significant association between preoperative NLR and tumor stage.…”

“…Inflammatory responses in the tumor microenvironment have been reflected by some common markers in peripheral blood, for example, some cytokines, leucocytes, and their subtypes [12]. However, further studies investigating the prognostic impact of the peripheral blood component in localized RCC patients are warranted [13].…”
