Qualitative parameters of the piapara semen (Leporinus elongatus Valenciennes, 1850)

Abstract: Qualitative parameters of piapara semen (Leporinus elongatus) were evaluated before and after hormonal induction with carp pituitary extract at 2.5 mg.kg -1 of live weight. The progressive motility, the spermatic vigor and the lifetime of the spermatozoa were higher before the hormonal induction (P > 0.05). The percentage of normal spermatozoa and spermatozoa with secondary pathologies did not differ (P > 0.05) between treatments: before induction (44.0 and 44.4%, respectively) and after-induction (44.3 and 46… Show more

“…These tests are implemented in the PROC GLM and PROC GENMOD procedures, respectively. MiraLópez et al (2010) for the same specie (89.0%) and for other species (Streit Jr et al 2008;Povh et al 2010;Maria et al 2011;Streit Jr et al 2012). In addition, no reference range of sperm motility was available for L. marmoratus in Brazil.…”

“…Sperm count was determined by diluting 5.0 µL of the semen sample in 25 mL buffered formal saline (1:5000) and spermatozoa were counted in a Neubauer chamber with 10 µL diluent (semen + buffered formal saline) under a light microscope (20X). Sperm morphology was evaluated in the smears of the diluents (semen + buffered formal saline) stained with Rose Bengal as described by Streit Jr et al (2008). The microscope slide containing the smears was dried and examined under a phase-contrast microscope at 40X magnification.…”

“…Other studies report 90% (KAVAMOTO et al, 1999) and 97% (MILIORINI et al, 2011) normal sperm in Prochilodus lineatus, 64% in Leporinus elongatus (STREIT Jr. et al 2008b), 57% in the dorado Salminus maxillosus (STREIT Jr. et al 2008a), 53% in the cachara Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (STREIT Jr. et al 2012) and 16% in the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (MATAVELI et al 2007). The variation of normal semen percentage found among the species is influenced by several factors such as the nutritional status of the fish, size, age, and time of the year (VIVEIROS; GODINHO, 2009;SANCHES et al, 2011;NAVARRO et al, 2014).…”

“…Porém, estes autores descreveram que os percentuais elevados deste tipo de anormalidades podem estar relacionados ao procedimento de preparação e coleta do sêmen (Streit-Jr et al, 2008).…”
