Ultrastructural changes in female hepatocytes during ovarian maturation of Steindachnerina insculpta (Pisces: Curimatidae)

Abstract: During gonadal maturation the females of Steindachnerina insculpta, a teleost of the Furnas reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil, show low hepatosomatic and high gonadossomatic indexes, suggesting possible transference of hepatic substances to the ovaries. In comparison to the resting phase, in the maturation/ mature one the hepatocytes show greater development of both smooth and rough endoplasmic reticula, increased electron density in the mitochondria, and glycogen scattered throughout the cytoplasm. In both rest… Show more

“…Vitellogenin is manufactured in the liver from stored reserves and is translocated to the ovary where it is incorporated as yolk granules in the vitellogenic oocytes (Arukwe and Goksøyr, 2003). The variations observed in the HSI of females constitute evidence of this transference (Ribeiro et al., 2006). However, in the present work no significant differences in the HSI of A. scabripinnis were found.…”

“…Morphological changes in the liver may include the appearance of vacuolization of hepatocytes, glycogen depletion, alteration of capillary sinusoids, change in size of hepatocytes, and necrosis (Cengiz et al, 2001;Glover et al, 2007) which, according to some authors, may influence the synthesis of vitellogenin in the liver and the formation of vitellogenic follicles (Al-Ghais, 2013;Barni et al, 2014;Marcon et al, 2014Marcon et al, , 2015. Furthermore, hepatic physiology can be compromised differently depending on the period of exposure to pesticides, the concentration of the contaminant, and dietary habits (Ribeiro et al, 2006;Al-Ghais, 2013;Barni et al, 2014;Benze et al, 2014).…”

“…No entanto, no estudo de Taranger et al (2006) machos e fêmeas de bacalhau do Atlântico (Gadus morhua) sob regime de luz contínua (LL) apresentaram maiores valores de IHS em relação ao regime de luz natural (LN), indicando que o grupo de LL investiu menos energia para a reprodução. Ribeiro et al (2006) também constataram em Steindachnerina (Characiforme: Curimatidae) diferenças no IHS, que diminuiu da fase de repouso para a fase de maturação.…”
