Cannibalism as the main feeding behaviour of tucunares introduced in Southeast Brazil

Abstract: Individuals of its own genus were the main food item of two species of tucunares (Cichla cf. ocellaris and Cichla monoculus) introduced into the Volta Grande Reservoir. The abundance of adult tucunares may cause intra-specific competition, possibly leading to the high cannibalism rates found.

“…Cannibalism registered may characterize high population density or lack of food sources and shelter for the juveniles (Gomiero & Braga 2004b). In Trinidad, the guppies (Poecilia reticulata) exhibited different reproductive characteristics related to different types of predators (Reznick & Endler 1982).…”

“…The intensity of infection associated with increased body size shown by Moravec et al (2002) differs from our results. In the present case, C. piquiti weighing 301-800 g showed the highest MI of infection, probably related to the fact that fish of lower weight might eat invertebrates (Gomiero & Braga, 2004a) that are intermediate hosts of proteocephalideans (Scholz, 1999). In contrast to the present study, Moravec et al (2002) did not observe seasonal variation.…”

“…Another important aspect in the adaptability to new environmental conditions that should be considered is Cichla's opportunistic feeding behavior (Resende et al, 2008) and cannibalism (Gomiero & Braga, 2004). For example, it was observed that cannibalism is more accentuated during Cichla's spawning periods and due to scarcity of alternative food items, such as small individuals of small native fish species (Gomiero & Braga, 2004;Villares Junior & Gomiero, 2010).…”

On the other hand, low rates of cannibalism occur in natural environments and in invaded sites mainly due to high availability of prey (Resende et al, 2008;Winemiller et al, 1997;Zaret, 1977).…”
