BackgroundBats are key components to the Neotropical forests. Unfortunately, their bad reputation is a major obstacle in their conservation as it creates fear and hostility towards them. Understanding this reputation acquired by bats and studying interactions between bats and humans has shown fundamental promise when creating strategies to forge a non-antagonistic coexistence between both parts and in the promotion of bat conservation in areas with ever-rising human occupation.MethodsNinety people were surveyed from three villages that were situated around a Biological Reserve in the state of Paraiba; located in Northern Brazil. The survey was completed using semi-structured interviews addressing villager’s knowledge of the biology and ecology of bats, their interactions with bats, potential medicinal uses, and their socioeconomic situation. Additionally, we sampled the bats that reside in or visit these villages.ResultsBats were often considered harmful, dangerous and carriers of disease. Bats were often connected to hematophagia, as well. The respondents believe that impacts such as the deforestation are forcing bats into urban environments. With this research, we were able to register one of the few records of bats in popular medicine in Brazil.ConclusionThe folklore and superstition surrounding bats can form an obstacle that affects their conservation. Environmental education is an important step in order to create a harmonious coexistence between humans and bats and to mitigate the impending conflicts between humanity and nature.

As abelhas são importantes polinizadores, portanto fundamentais para a manutenção da biodiversidade. Entretanto, um conjunto de transformações antrópicas ao ambiente tem causado o colapso das abelhas. Esta pesquisa teve o objetivo de avaliar a percepção ambiental dos educandos de uma escola pública de grande porte de Cáceres sobre a importância das abelhas para a biodiversidade, com base no conteúdo do livro didático. Uma escola pública na zona rural foi incluída na pesquisa para avaliar a percepção dos educandos que vivem em ambiente não urbano. O livro didático foi avaliado pelo método qualitativo de análise de conteúdos. A pesquisa quali-quantitativa foi desenvolvida por meio da pesquisa-ação: um questionário estruturado foi aplicado aos educandos antes e depois de uma atividade de sensibilização ambiental. Como resultados observou-se que os livros didáticos não abordaram claramente o papel das abelhas na manutenção da biodiversidade e as causas e consequências de seu colapso. Após a sensibilização ambiental notou-se avanço na percepção dos educandos sobre a importância das abelhas. Portanto, a atividade de Educação Ambiental, com a utilização de elementos concretos, contribuiu com a complementação do conteúdo do livro didático sobre as abelhas e com a construção da percepção ambiental crítica dos educandos sobre a importância das abelhas para a biodiversidade.

This objective of this work was to assess the knowledge of students in public schools about rabies and leishmaniasis, through educational interventions. A total of 628 questionnaires were applied in public students from Apodi, Felipe Guerra and Severiano Melo. The questionnaires were administered before and after the educational interventions in the form of lectures. The data were discussed through a descriptive analysis. Before the presentation, 53.9% of students claimed to know the transmission mode of leishmaniasis and after, this percentage increased to 92.2%. However, before the lectures, only 6.0% of respondents associated the transmission to sandflies, and after, this percentage increased to 75.7%. For rabies, before the lectures, 63.7% of students reported knowing how rabies is transmitted and, after the lectures, 92.8% said how it was the transmission. Concerning the transmission, before the presentations, 68.3% reported that it was through bite or injury of animals and, after the lectures, the index increased to 80.4%. In conclusion, the student´s perception of public education on rabies and leishmaniasis was higher in all aspects addressed after educational intervention compared to the same questions about the knowledge of the disease before the intervention. It also concludes that the perception of students for rabies is greater than for leishmaniasis.KEYWORDS: education, school, extension, public health, zoonoses.
