Assessing human-bat interactions around a protected area in northeastern Brazil

Abstract: BackgroundBats are key components to the Neotropical forests. Unfortunately, their bad reputation is a major obstacle in their conservation as it creates fear and hostility towards them. Understanding this reputation acquired by bats and studying interactions between bats and humans has shown fundamental promise when creating strategies to forge a non-antagonistic coexistence between both parts and in the promotion of bat conservation in areas with ever-rising human occupation.MethodsNinety people were surveye… Show more

“…Myths and folk stories have led to people lighting res in bats' caves, killing them, and even capturing them to use in supposed cures for diseases (Kamins et al, 2015;Rego et al, 2015). Fortunately, in the BAtSS scale we obtained a Myths dimension with a good level of internal consistency (Martínez-Arias et al, 2014).…”

“…Some works approach this construct through semi-structured interviews and/or open questions, or design test questions expressly for the investigation in hand with little psychometric analysis (Aziz et al, 2017;Bhattacharjee et al, 2018;Castilla et al, 2020;Gbogbo & Kyei, 2017;Moran et al, 2015;Rego et al, 2015;Shapiro et al, 2020). Other authors have developed speci c scales, including analysis of content validity and internal consistency, mostly using Cronbach's alpha coe cient and/or principal component analysis.…”

“…Bats can use human structures as perches and they are known to adapt to urban landscapes with different constructions and survive in areas occupied by people when they lose their habitat (Rego et al 2015). Despite this characteristic and bad reputation, conflicts with bats were reported by only one participant.…”

“…The order Chiroptera is the second most speciose order of mammals, with over 1300 species known worldwide, and 178 known for Brazil (Fenton & Simmons, 2014;Nogueira et al, 2014). Bats are also known for their ecologic versatility, exploring every non-parasitic trophic strategy, as well as hematophagy (Rego, Zeppelini, Lopez, & Alves, 2015), contributing with ecological services such as seed dispersal, pollination and insect population control (Aguiar & Antonini, 2008;Stevens, Willig, & Fox, 2004).…”
